Litwiller interim label is dropped

    Scott Litwiller will no longer be the acting superintendent of South Adams Schools.
    At their meeting on Tuesday, school board members (except for Steve Dobler, who was absent) unanimously approved Litwiller for a four-year contract as superintendent, effective July 1, 2011.

Robert D. Marquardt

March 9, 2011

    Robert D. Marquardt, 85, of rural Monroeville, died at 6:25 p.m. Monday in Lutheran Hospital at Fort Wayne.
    He was born on April 25, 1925, in Monroeville to Edward and Bertha Salway Marquardt.
    He married Opal P. Feasby on July 28, 1945, in Monroeville; she passed away on November 9, 1999.

Brian Hakes earns FW All-City hockey honors

    Brian Hakes of Decatur has been named to the Coaches All-City Team of the Fort Wayne High School Hockey Association.
    A junior at Bellmont High School, the 6-3, 205-pound Hakes was one of four defensemen chosen to the 12-player squad (10 skaters, 2 goalies). The team was selected by coaches of the six teams; they could not vote for their own players.

Baker earns 2nd team All-NHC honors

    Senior guard Joe Baker was the only Bellmont player named to the All-NHC squad this year as he was put on the second team.
    The 6'2" senior led the Braves with a 10.1 scoring average this season, easily the top scorer for the 4-18 Braves team.
    Bellmont went 0-7 in the NHC, which didn't give coach Larry Patterson much leverage at the conference coaches meeting recently. Homestead won the conference with a 7-0 mark while Columbia City and Carroll both went 5-2 and Norwell 4-3.

Daniel Meyer named to North All-Star squad

    Daniel Meyer, Bellmont High School's career leader in touchdowns (42) and yards (more than 3,500), will join 11 other northeastern Indiana players on the 46-member North squad for this summer's annual North-South Indiana High School All-Star game.
    Meyer, who will play fullback in the all-star contest, but will be a linebacker at the University of Indianapolis this fall, was also a top notch wrestler for the Braves, finishing third in the state this year and 112-19, with 66 pins in his four-year career.

Tigers execute plan, stun Bishop Luers 80-68 for title

    BERNE — "We were very confident," stated Keith Cochran after Bluffton's incredible 80-68 win over perennial state power Bishop Luers in the championship game of the 2A South Adams Boys Basketball Sectional Monday night.
    "We had a game plan. In fact, Coach (Kevin) Leising had a 15-page book covering everything we had to do to win this game, their strengths and weaknesses. We knew exactly what we were supposed to do, then went out and did it," added the 6-10 junior center, who lives in Decatur.

Rain shouldn’t renew flooding

    Rainfall expected late tonight in Decatur and Adams County isn't expected to renew severe flooding woes here.
    The St. Marys River has fallen another foot overnight and stood at 18.2 feet at 7 a.m. today, local weather station officials said. The river crested at 22.3 last Thursday.
    The National Weather Service said this morning that there is a slight chance of rain in the Decatur area tonight, then a 100 percent chance of rain and possibly a thunderstorm after 1 a.m.

Commissioners okay ‘emergency’ funding

    An emergency was declared by the Adams County commissioners on Monday, but not involving snow or floods or tornadoes.
    The "emergency" was merely a technical legal maneuver to allow up to $13,500 be spent to made Adams Superior Court handicap-accessible by installing doors and automatic door-opening systems.

Mary Ann Harvey

    Mary Ann T. Harvey, 76, loving wife, mother, and grandmother, went with the Lord on Monday morning at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne, with her family at her bedside.
    Mary Ann was born in Allen County, Indiana, on January 29, 1935, to Leslie and Viola Voirol Coonrod.
    She was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Decatur and the American Legion Auxiliary in Decatur and a life member of the Geneva Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary.

Winifred L. Spaulding

    Winifred L. Spaulding, 90, Decatur, died Monday, March 7, at the Woodcrest Nursing Center.
    She was born on April 30, 1920, in Mandan, North Dakota, to the late Walter G. and Isabelle Rowe-Black. She was married on June 15, 1946, to Dr. John B. Spaulding; he survives.
