Betty A. Rice

June 22, 2011

    Betty A. Rice, 74, of Decatur, died Tuesday in Adams Memorial Hospital.
    She was born to James I. and Della McGill Wilson.
    Among survivors are a daughter, Mrs. Pat (Madella A. "Ellie") Baker of New Corydon, and aa son, Donald E. Geiger of Port Charlotte, Florida.
    A service to celebrate her life will be held at 5:30 p.m. Thursday in Downing and Glancy Funeral Home, Geneva, with visiting hours from 1-5 p.m. Thursday.

Helen Swisher

    Helen "Jeane" Swisher, 63, formerly of Bluffton, died Monday in Ossian Health Care and Rehabilitation.
    She was born to Paul T. and Kathryn Kohls Heller.
    Among survivors are two sons, Doug Swisher of Decatur and Rob Swisher of Bluffton; a brother; and two sisters, Janelee Yoquelet of Decatur and Paula Heller of Bluffton.
    Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday in Goodwin Memorial Chapel at Bluffton, with visitation from 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

Cross Creek camp hosts 67 players

    A total of 67 youngsters participated in the recent Cross Creek Golf Camp according to notes released today by camp director Mike Macke.
    Macke said the five-day camp ended with a tournament last Friday and there also was a skills competition last Thursday based on various skills such as putting, chipping, and full swing.
    The tournament was broken down into age groups and from different tees. The different ages also played a varying number of holes in their tournament.

Area youth tourneys coming up

    Monroe Grain is ready to make a run at Monroe LL leaders Peterson Grain and the Farm Bureau Lifers as the regular season winds down. The tourney will be in full force Thursday, though the seeds have not been decided.
    The tourney will open with two games Thursday and two other seeded teams will take on winners of the Thursday games on Friday night. The tourney will pick up Monday and run through June 29, a Thursday. It is a double-elimination tourney.

Bids opening for covered bridge slated

    Ben Beer of Bluffton, who works for USI Consultants at Indianapolis, informed the Adams County Commissioners on Monday that three firms attended a pre-bid meeting last week in regard to the project to rehabilitate and restore the covered bridge in the south end of the county.
    The bids will be opened at next Monday's meeting of the commissioners.
    USI Consultants has completed the design of the project.

Anspaugh to become a ‘living legend’

    Those who recall David Anspaugh as a youth in Decatur in the 1950s and 1960s would never have attached the title "living legend" to him.
    However, decades later, Anspaugh, a veteran film and television director, has reached that level, having been acclaimed as an "Indiana Living Legend."

Lindahl winner Hankenson set for Chicago wrestling challenge

    Ryley Hankenson won 11 varsity letters at Bellmont, made two trips to the IHSAA State Individual Wrestling Finals , placing fifth in 2011, and won 128 matches in his Braves' career and started at defensive back for a state championship football team, yet Bellmont assistant wrestling coach Tim Myers calls him a "diamond in the rough" and that the University of Chicago is getting some kind of talent.

Bittner’s 2 homers pace DDS

    The Monroe Little League posted two games last Friday with lots of runs scored and four homers in one game:
    • Bank of Geneva beat Farm Bureau, 9-8.
    • Decatur Dental Services topped Peterson Grain, 10-9.
    In the BG-FB game, Bank of Geneva (5-9) had 10 hits, led by Joel Harvey's two triples, with his second one driving in the winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning. He also had a single. Teammates Corbin Becher, Hunter Lotter, and Drexel Canales each had two singles.

H.E.B.A. Mays Tourney set

    The Oetting Cubs will take on the Monroeville Pills Tuesday at Monroeville in the first game of the Hoosier East Baseball Alliance Mays Baseball Tournament.
    That winner will clash with league champion Kintz Insurance on Thursday at 6 p.m. at Monroeville. Box and Pallett of Monroeville will be in Decatur to take on Decatur Dental at 6 p.m. Thursday in the other upper bracket game.
    In the lower bracket, the Monmouth Fleming Rays will take on the Hull Lift Truck squad at 7:45 p.m. in Decatur.

Joseph E. Adams

    Joseph E. Adams was born on March 19, 1932, in Decatur and died on June 12, 2011, in Rochester, Minnesota.
    He was the loving husband of 57 years to Janet S. Adams, who passed in March.
    He was also the devoted father of Kathleen L. (Scott) Wickman and the dear grandfather of Lauren, Brennan, and Sean.
