Sandra G. McAdams

April 21, 2011

    Sandra Gay McAdams passed away on April 19, 2011.
    Mrs. McAdams was born in Atlanta, Georgia, and was a 1957 graduate of Northside High School. She attended Massey Business College, leading to various office management positions.
    She was most proud of supporting her husband’s distinguished military career by serving as an exemplary U.S. Army Military wife for 30 years.

Roxie A. Michael

    Roxie A. Michael, 51, of Craigville, died Monday in Lutheran Hospital at Fort Wayne.
    She was born to Robert E. and Malvra A. Bailey Grimm. Her father and stepmother, Judy, live in Poneto while her mother and stepfather, William Grover, reside in Vera Cruz.
    Other survivors include her husband, William K. "Bill" Michael; two sons, Kelvin P. Michael of Craigville and William K. Michael of Bluffton; and two daughters, Randell Michael of Craigville and Hali Michael of Fort Wayne.

Schultz inks with Newberry

    In a special ceremony last week at Bellmont, Bellmont All-State volleyball player Madison Schultz signed a letter of intent to play college ball at Newberry College in South Carolina.
    Schultz, the daughter of Scott and Cami Schultz of Decatur, played a critical role for Craig Krull's 2010 state 3A championship volleyball team at Bellmont, and she also was a member of the 2007 state champions at BHS. She played all four years and was a starter in three of those years.

Jobless rate lowest in 3 years

    Unemployment in Adams County hit its lowest point in nearly three years during March, leaving the county with the most attractive jobless rate among all northeast Indiana counties.
    According to figures released Tuesday by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development, the county's unemployment rate for March was 8.2 percent, down from 8.8 percent one month earlier and 9.2 percent in January. March's reading marked the lowest unemployment level in the county since a rate of 8.0 percent in July of 2008.

Storms rake county

    Storms which roared through Decatur and Adams County around 11 p.m. Tuesday brought some damage and heavy rain..
    Officials at the Decatur weather station said the city received 1.12 inches of rain, pushing the St. Marys River to 13.9 feet at 7 a.m. today — a jump of 9 feet in just 24 hours.
    Berne received 1.27 inches of rain.
    At 8:30 a.m. today, the National Weather Service issued a flood watch for the Wabash River near Linn Grove from late Thursday night until Sunday morning.

BHS’ Early College program hailed as key economic development tool

    The transformation of Bellmont High School into an Early College High School is advancing it into an elite class in Indiana, and good schools can be a powerful economic development tool, a point underscored again and again at Tuesday night's meeting of Decatur City Council.
    Bellmont Principal Scot Croner, a driving force behind the program, was on hand to lay out details of the program, what it means to the students and their parents, and to the community as a whole.

Rachel R. Graber

    Rachel R. Graber, 91, of Berne, died Monday in Swiss Village Retirement Community.
    She was born in Adams County on November 2, 1919, to Jacob J. and Lena Habegger Schwartz.
    Among survivors are a son, Don Graber of Geneva; a daughter, Mrs. Bill (Eileen) Daugherty of Pennville; and a brother, Millard Schwartz of Berne.

Virginia G. Mauck

    Virginia G. Mauck, 96, of Muncie, passed away at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, April 18, 2011, at River Terrace Estates in Bluffton.
    She was born on October 1, 1914, in Jay County to Charles E. and Alpha Mae (Gray) Maitlen.
    She married Damon Mangus in 1934; he passed away in November 1945. She married Osa Mauck in 1947; he passed away in 1963.

Jerry L. Penrod

    Jerry L. Penrod, 67, of Bluffton, died at 10:15 a.m. Monday at his residence.
    He was born on November 7, 1943, in Bluffton, the only child of Claude and Verda Gordon Penrod, who are deceased.
    He married Joanna Jump on August 30, 1964, in Uniondale, Indiana, and she survives.

Steven B. Riley

    Steven B. Riley, 69, a lifelong resident of rural Monroe, died at 7:26 p.m. Sunday in Lutheran Hospital at Fort Wayne, where he had been a patient for six days.
    He was born to Merle and Ida Girod Riley, who are deceased.
    He married Pauline Schwartz on April 14, 1963; she passed away in 2002.
    He was a member of Salem Community Church, serving as chairman of the board of trustees for many years.
