Certified Carty offers first look at NA budget

    Larry Carty, business manager for North Adams Community Schools, has completed the required 92 hours of instruction and has obtained designation by the Indiana Association of School Business Officials as a Chief Business Officer.
    To obtain certification from the statewide organization, individuals must fulfill all of the personal, ethical and professional requirements as established by the group.

SA board hires girls cage coach

    On Tuesday night, the South Adams School Board approved the hiring of its new varsity girls basketball coach, Ryan Cunningham of Huntington.
    Cunningham takes over the Lady Starfires basketball program, replacing Brandon Bailey, who left after just one season at the helm.

Lingenfelter to sponsor racing

    Lingenfelter Performance Engineering of Decatur is a partner with Holley Performance Products in sponsoring a drag race at the Holley LS Fest on September 9, 10, and 11 at Beech Bend Raceway Park in Bowling Green, Kentucky. LS is a type of engine in some General Motors cars.

NA elected board OK needed; could begin in 2012

    Officials at North Adams Community Schools expect to learn in the next month or six weeks the status of a petition that, if formally approved by the state Department of Education, will pave the way for school board members to be elected beginning next year.
    Current board members voted in March of this year to accept a citizens' petition that calls for board members to be elected, effectively replacing the school district's 40-year method of filling board seats by appointment.

Sheriff says it appears deputy acted properly

    The subject of the shooting of a robbery suspect by an off-duty Adams County deputy sheriff in a business in Berne on Sunday arose at Tuesday's meeting of the county council when Sheriff Shane Rekeweg appeared before the council on other matters.
    Rekeweg said preliminary indications are that deputy Diosdado "Dio" Hernandez acted properly in assessing the situation he faced and in firing his department-issued handgun. He shot the suspect in an arm, causing the man to drop the handgun he was displaying in his other hand.

CVS backs off buy of SA property

    Steve Kreigh of GKB Enterprises has rescinded the company's June 6 offer of $650,000 to purchase the former South Adams Elementary School property located across from the Muensterberg Plaza and Clock Tower in Berne. The original offer was contingent upon a lease being signed with CVS.
    According to South Adams Schools Superintendent Scott Litwiller at Tuesday's school board meeting, Kreigh said in a letter to the school corporation that "CVS has indicated that its relocation is no longer a priority."

Herbert E. Fruchte

    Herbert Eugene "Herb" Fruchte, 81, of Monroe, died at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday at home of natural causes.
    He was born on December 2, 1929, in Decatur to Albert and Elma Christman Fruchte.
    He married Clisty Rich on August 6, 1950; she survives.
    He graduated from Decatur High School in 1947 and was the second person hired at the CTS Corp. plant in Berne, where he had a long career as an engineer from 1959 until retirement.

J. Ann McDougal

    J. Ann McDougal, 71, formerly of rural Decatur, died on Sunday at Visiting Nurse and Hospice Home in Fort Wayne.
    She was born to Joseph F. and Lena M. Savieo Bowyer.
    Among survivors are three sons, Gil R. McDougal of Martinsville; Gregory A. McDougal of Fort Wayne; and Geoffrey J. McDougal of Greenwood; and one brother, James Bowyer of Fort Wayne.

Michael C. Schwartz

August 9, 2011

    Michael C. Schwartz, seven days old, of rural Decatur, died Monday in Dupont Hospital at Fort Wayne.
    He was born on August 1 to Joseph S. and Rebecca S. Christner Schwartz.
    Aside from his parents, survivors include six brothers, Paul, Neal, Nathan, Merlin, Matthew, and Sam Schwartz, all at home.

Jets to host Eastside; events slated at BHS

    Adams Central will host Eastside in a football scrimmage on Friday, Aug. 12,  at 6 p.m. while Bellmont will play host to Jay County and South Adams will travel to Norwell.
    Admission will be $2 at Adams Central. All-sport passes will be sold at this event, it was noted by athletic officials.
    Admission at Bellmont will be a food item, or $2 will the proceeds going to the St. Mark’s United Methodist Food Pantry.
