    Lucy J. Smith, 81, of Portland, died Thursday in Jay County Hospital at Portland.
    She was born to Harley and Ioma Gegenheimer Miller
    Among survivors are her husband, Bud; a son, Tom Overla of Portland; and a daughter, Mrs. Greg (Wanda) Shaneyfelt of Geneva.
    Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Williamson and Spencer Funeral Home, Portland, with burial at a later date in Gravel Hill Cemetery, rural Bryant. Visiting hours are 9-11 a.m. Saturday.

Top boys cage post goes to home grown John Baker

    He comes highly recommended from Purdue coach Matt Painter and from Tennessee coach Cuonzo Martin, and former Bellmont standout varsity coach Shaun Busick chimed in with his support. He's John Baker, who will likely be one of the youngest head boys basketball coaches in the state of Indiana next year when he jumps from his jayvee post of one year to top spot in the program at Bellmont High.

Patriots hold down Braves 5-3

    "How 'bout dem Patriots," said Heritage coach Dean Lehrman after his charges clipped Bellmont 5-3 Tuesday, to improve to 10-5 overall.
    "It has been many a year since Heritage has beaten the Bellmont Braves on a baseball field," pointed out the veteran coach.

Op Cleanup set to begin

    May has arrived and that means the city's Operation Cleanup soon will be under way, Bill Karbach, a member of the city's Board of Works and Safety, said at Tuesday night's city council meeting.

County jail is being spruced up

    The Adams County Sheriff's Department is sprucing up the county jail and facing different situations regarding three deputy sheriffs.
    Sheriff Shane Rekeweg made the report at Monday's meeting of the commissioners, saying the public areas of the jail have been repainted, the hallways are being repainted, and the cellblocks will be repainted as soon as possible because the number of inmates is temporarily down.

Squaws’ 1600 team sizzles to best ever time, but no record

    Three of the four Bellmont 1600 relay runner set season's bests, including a sizzling 59.7 leg by lead runner Alexis Harvey, as the Squaws held off a strong Carroll group for the victory Tuesday at the BHS oval, and they did it with the fastest recorded time in the history of the Squaws track program.
    But it wasn't a record.

Sanders sets mark for Franklin

    DEFIANCE, Oh —  Senior second baseman Ian Sanders (Decatur, Ind./Bellmont H.S.) collected three hits and broke the Franklin College career record in that stat department in the second game of Saturday's Heartland Conference baseball doubleheader at Defiance.

Referendum bid crushed

    Voters in the North Adams school district on Tuesday overwhelmingly rejected a general fund referendum which would have generated $1.25 million in additional property tax revenues annually for seven years.
    Ballot results showed 86 percent of district residents who went to the polls on Tuesday were not in favor of a tax increase. The final tally was 2,144-345 against the referendum.

Cool day, warm talk: fireworks

    It may have been another mostly foul day in Decatur — you know, the kind we've had way too many of lately: cool, damp and windy — but inside City Hall the talk was of warmer times: the Fourth of July and the city's annual fireworks show.
    Chief Organizer Adam Eguia was on hand at the city council meeting to make his annual pitch for the fireworks display and, also as usual, it was quickly and unanimously given.

Hughes wins Fort Wayne primary
    A former Allen County councilwoman —and former head of the Chamber of Commerce in Decatur — won the Republican nomination to challenge Democratic Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry in the November election.
    Paula Hughes got 56 percent of the vote to easily win a five-candidate field in Tuesday’s GOP primary.
    The Journal Gazette reports Hughes says she’ll challenge city spending under Henry and plans to cut the mayor’s salary and take-home vehicle.
