    Sharon Thornton, 63, of Decatur, died today in the nursing center at Woodcrest Retirement Community.
    Funeral arrangements are pending at Haggard-Sefton and Hirschy Funeral Home, Decatur.

Monroe Grain stings Lifers 8-7

    A three-run sixth helped Monroe Grain to an 8-7 win over the Farm Bureau Lifers Monday in a key Monroe Little League game. That game, plus the 14-2 win by Peterson Grain over Bank of Geneva, put the Lifers and Peterson tied at 9-3 on the season, tops in the league.
    Monroe Grain improved to 7-5 win the win. Kyle Brown tripled while Ian Wellmann and Brown both doubled. Wellman had two hits.
    Dylan Miller and Drew Schultz both doubled with 2 hits for Lifers. Anthony Mosser offered 2 hits.

Benefit set for girl, 6

    Editors note: The following was written by Ebony Ann Fawcett's mother, Beth Ann Fawcett. A children's carnival and silent auction will be held for Ebony Ann from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. this Saturday at First United Methodist Church, 502 W. Monroe St. in Decatur. The benefit will feature games, prizes, a raffle, a bake sale, hot dogs, cotton candy and more. The event is open to the public.

Minch proposes $600 pay hike for Berne workers

    Full-time municipal employees in Berne would receive a $600 across-the-board pay increase in 2012, pending city council's approval, according to a proposal announced Monday evening by Mayor John Minch. The pay raise equals approximately 1.55 percent for each employee.

Mat triple crown is something Baumgartner expects to win

    Bryce Baumgartner, who is not a stranger to national championships, didn't have it as a goal to win the triple crown of Indiana wrestling this past spring.
    "Because I do it every year," said the 12-year-old soon to be seventh grader at Bellmont Middle School.
    Well, he has done just that — win Folkstyle, Freestyle and Greco-Roman titles — in each of the past three seasons. He did it this year as a 120-pound Novice.

‘Mission accomplished’ as Caden Friedt honors his uncle

(Caden Friedt was one of two Decatur Wrestling Club grapplers to win the state mat triple crown, state titles in Folkstyle, Greco-Roman, and Freestyle.)

    Most nine-year-old boys worry about video games and when the next trip to McDonald's is slated.
    Caden Friedt, the nephew of the late John Friedt, took on more somber thoughts this spring with the passing of his uncle, who had been a dedicated wrestling coach for Bellmont and Decatur for almost four decades.

    Funeral arrangements are pending at Haggard-Sefton and Hirschy Funeral Home, Decatur.

Animals display for 175th

    Mounted animals, birds, and fish, plus animal pelts, will be part of the pageantry as the City of Decatur celebrates its 175th anniversary on August 18-28.
    The free display of mounted creatures will be held in Riverside Center on Saturday, August 27, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with setup time the day before, from 3-6 p.m.
    Local taxidermist Dick Beard will show off an elk he mounted that stands nine feet tall (counting its antlers), plus an antelope, a bobcat, a mule deer, and a white-tailed deer.

Mosser seeking Berne position

    Rod Mosser, a former coach and teacher at South Adams, Adams Central and Bluffton high schools, has announced his candidacy for the District 3 seat on Berne City Council.
    Mosser, a Democrat, said he looks forward to using his education and work experience to help move Berne forward.
    The District 3 seat is currently held by first-term Republican Mark Wynn.

Hoagland Days opens Thursday

    Hoagland Days opens Thursday and will run through Saturday in Hoagland Park, sponsored by the Hoagland-Area Advancement Association.    
    The schedule:
    Thursday, June 16
    Merchants' tent open during fair hours.
    4:30-6:30 p.m.—Registration for the greased pig contest at the park arena area.
    5-10 p.m.—Food court open in the food tent.
    6 p.m.—Midway rides operate.
