Audra E. Miller

August 1, 2011

    Audra E. Miller, 88, of Decatur, widow of Rev. Fuhrman Miller, died today in the nursing center at Woodcrest Retirement Community.
    Funeral arrangements are pending at Haggard, Sefton and Hirschy Funeral Home, Decatur.

S. Sue Snyder

    S. Sue Snyder, 74, of Berne, died Friday in Lutheran Hospital at Fort Wayne.
    She was born to Ivan and Maude Montgomery.
    Among survivors are a daughter, Kendra Bauman of Berne, and a son, Clay Snyder of Berne.
    Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today in Downing and Glancy Funeral Home, Geneva, with private burial at Gravel Hill Cemetery, rural Bryant. Visiting hours are 1-3 p.m. today.

Practices set to begin

    Paperwork must be turned into coaches or to the athletic departments before varsity athletes will be able to participate in fall practices, it was noted by area athletic directors. Golf practices begin today while most of the rest of the fall sports will begin with officials practices on Monday, Aug. 1.
    Bellmont Athletic Director Dale Manis that the following items are necessary: IHSAA approved physical exam form, medical consent card, BHS Athletic Code of Conduct sheets, and Legal Reporting Waiver form.

HEBA All-Stars cop 2nd in Monmouth Clemente Tourney

    The Hoosier East Baseball Alliance (HEBA) All-Stars finished second in the Monmouth eight and under tournament finished Thursday night by falling to Elmhurst 13-7 in the title game.
    The HEBA stars had defeated New Haven 11-1 and avenged an earlier loss to Hoagland with a 16-4 triumph to reach the title contest.

    Glenn R. "Butch" Griner, 64, of rural Rockford, Ohio, died Wednesday at St. Rita's Medical Center in Lima, Ohio.
    He was born on May 2, 1947, in St. Marys, Ohio, to Walter and Beatrice Huston Griner, who are deceased.
    On May 30, 1966, he married Jane Harris, who lives in Rockford.

    Three "yes" votes, one abstention, and one absence on Thursday night at a special meeting of the North Adams school board saw a two-year contract with the North Adams Teachers' Association (NATA) approved.

Swiss Days off to a hot start

    The 40th Swiss Days festival in Berne kicked off its three-day run on Thursday, accompanied by the sweltering heat which has become all too familiar to county residents throughout the month.
    While a handful of festival events were held throughout the day, official opening ceremonies were held at 6 p.m. The opener was highlighted by speeches welcoming a trio of dignitaries from a community in Switzerland with which Berne is attempting to form a Sister City relationship.

First Bank of Berne plans purchase of AmericanTrust

    Officials of First Bank of Berne (FBB) and Peru-based AmericanTrust Federal Savings Bank (ATFSB) have announced that, subject to regulatory approvals, the Berne bank will take over all assets, deposits, and properties of ATFSB late this year.
    First Bank of Berne, which has $426 million in assets, plans to add ATFSB's $83 million in assets and $84 million in deposits.
    ATFSB is based in Peru and has branches in Kokomo and Bunker Hill.

Arnold’s goes 2-2 at Hoagland

    The Arnold's Construction 10-U Decatur All-Stars recently concluded its postseason campaign with a 2-2 showing at the Hoagland 10-U All-Star Baseball Tournament.
    Arnold's fell to the Harlan All-Stars 10-5, downed New Haven 8-5, stopped Monroeville 13-7, and fell to Kendallville 6-3. The two teams which defeated the local squad made it to the finals of the tourney.
