Auditor was not shirking

    A page one story in Wednesday's edition of the Daily Democrat about a request by Adams County Auditor Bill Borne for the county council to approve pay increases for his staff incorrrectly reported criticism from county council member Phil Wulliman.
    The error occurred because this reporter misapprehended a change in the discussion between Borne's pay request and a visit to the council's meeting in June by Terry Smith of the county health department in regard to pay issues for the health staff.

St. Joseph School participates in voucher program

    St. Joseph Catholic School in Decatur will participate in the new statewide voucher program recently signed into law by Governor Mitch Daniels, school officials announced Monday. 
    In compliance with the new School Scholarship Act, St. Joseph plans to open its doors to a greater number of  families and provide enhanced educational opportunities to local parents and students, St. Joe Principal Karla Hormann said in a press release.

Larry W. Moore

    Larry W. Moore, 60, of Decatur, died at his residence on Monday, July 11, 2011.
    He was born on February 25, 1951, in Greenfield, Ohio, to the late Richard A. Moore and Mary Lou (Pickens) Hubbell.
    Larry attended First Baptist Church in Decatur.
    He retired after 38 years as a utility operator at Central Soya and Bunge North America in Decatur.
    He was a member of American Legion Post 43 in Decatur and served his country in the United States Marines Corps.

Edna Shoaf

    Edna Shoaf, 94, of Salt Lake City, Utah, a former resident of Berne, died on Tuesday.
    Funeral arrangements are pending at Yager-Kirchhofer Funeral Home, Berne.

Marion E. Sipe

    Marion E Sipe, 80, of Decatur, passed away on Tuesday, July 12, 2011, at Woodcrest Retirement Community's Nursing Center.
    He was born on September 29, 1930, in Adams County to Daniel J. and Bernice (Fisher) Sipe.
    On October 30, 1954, he married Barbara A. Jacobs. She preceded him on November 2, 2000.

Mind’s Eye lands slot in Senior final by clipping Geimer

    Mind's Eye Graphics assured itself of a place in the championship game of the Decatur Girls Senior Softball League tourney as they rallied for a 6-4 win over Geimer Construction in the double-elimination event Tuesday night at Hanna-Nuttman Park.

County school boards approve coaches for coming year

    Coaching staffs for fall sports were solidified by school boards at Adams Central, Bellmont, and South Adams this week with South Adams having the most changes.
    The SA school board approved 40 fall coaches ranging from volunteer to head coaches and noted 17 of the 40 positions will be filled by new individuals.

Elder joins NA board

    Don Elder, a retired educator selected by sitting members of the North Adams school board in May to fill a pending vacancy in their ranks, was issued the oath of office on Tuesday as he officially joined the board.

Auditor accused of some ‘shirking’

    A request by the county auditor for the county council to consider increasing the pay of his five staff members by a total of $6,000 led to an unusual and unexpected response from a veteran councilman on Tuesday.
    Auditor Bill Borne, who was not present, had submitted a two-page, 11-paragraph, single-spaced request for the $6,000, seeking $2,000 for his chief deputy and $1,000 each for the other four staffers. The council chose to withhold action until the 2012 budget is prepared in September.

Retiring hospital director honored

    A limestone mountain that's also a fountain was dedicated on Tuesday in front of Adams Memorial Hospital to honor the man who's retiring after being its executive director since 1989 — Marvin Baird.
    Baird, who came to Adams County in the midst of a career as a hospital management expert, will leave in coming weeks to move to Greenwood with his wife, Jackie.
