    Helen P. Buchanan, 69, of Willshire, Ohio, died at 5:39 a.m. Monday in Adams Memorial Hospital.
    She was born on February 3, 1942 in Hyden, Kentucky, to Buck and Mary Ann Sheppard Van Over, who are deceased.
    She married J. Alvin Buchanan on April 23, 1961, in Southside Church of Christ at Fort Wayne. He survives.
    Helen was a member of Fort Recovery Church of Christ in Fort Recovery, Ohio.

Berne budget labeled ‘skinny’

    Berne City Council members got their first glimpse of the city's proposed $2.2 million budget for 2012 on Monday evening. The spending outline for next year includes a general fund budget of just over $1.5 million — an increase of just $38,000 over this year's spending blueprint.
    "It's a skinny budget," said clerk-treasurer Gwen Maller during a review of the document. "You don't want to spend more than you take in — like some cities do."

Senior center denied funds

    Despite a request earlier this year from board members of the South Adams Senior Center for financial assistance from the city for the day-to-day operations of the center, the 2012 budget unveiled before Berne City Council on Monday contained no such appropriation.

Arrest made in Walgreen holdup

    A 23-year-old Wells County man who has been living in Berne is in the Adams County Jail this morning, accused of robbing the Walgreen Pharmacy on 13th St. in Decatur on July 18.
    Caleb B. Sain turned himself into authorities on Monday.
    Contacted by Decatur police Detective Mike Mahan on the telephone, Sain said he would meet authorities at a motel in Fort Wayne. He was picked up and returned here.
    No bond has been set for the holdup suspect.

Boy, 4, shot killed as he, dad fished

    A pleasant day of fishing by a father and son on a quiet lake in northern Wells County last Friday turned tragic when an apparently stray bullet fatally injured the boy, just one month shy of his fifth birthday.
    The incident left Jacob M. "Jake" Michuda of Bluffton with a gunshot wound in the head that led to his death early Saturday morning at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne. He was shot around 11 a.m. while he and his father, Matt Michuda, were fishing from a pier.

Corral is named detective as PD nears full strength

    More than seven months after a vacancy occurred in the Decatur Police Department's detective division, it was formally filled on Friday as veteran patrolman and sergeant Leonard Corral Jr. was given the oath by Mayor John Schultz.
    Corral, widely known as "Lennie," has been a member of the department for almost 17 years, having joined the force in August of 1994. He was a patrolman until 2008, when he was promoted to sergeant.

Jobless rate ticks up

    Jobless numbers in Adams County crept up for the second consecutive month in June, according to statistics released Friday by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development.
    The latest figures showed the county's unemployment rate for June at 8.0 percent, up two-tenths of a percent from May. The county had hit a three-year jobless low in April at 7.6 percent.

Hop's Heresy: Getts winning over Bellmont gridders

    "Everybody likes it. We're having a good time and having fun, and working hard on the seven on sevens and really gaining momentum for the season," stated Bellmont linebacker Dewey Melcher on the state of Bellmont football under new coach Larry Getts.
    Melcher's obviously positive feeling for the first-year Bellmont coach seems to be shared by a good many of the BHS players, who will go at it for real in another week.

Decatur Twelves win pool

    BLUFFTON — A huge eight-run rally in the top of the sixth keyed the Decatur 12-and-under All-Stars to a 13-6 win over South Adams and the pool title in the Bluffton Baseball Bash Saturday.
    The Mobile Ones fell to the eventual champions from Chillicothe, O. in the Sunday playoffs and took home third place medals in the tourney.

    Lori A. Beer, 49, of Decatur, died at home on Saturday.
    Funeral arrangements are pending at Haggard-Sefton and Hirschy Funeral Home, Decatur.
