Area business backer profiled

    An organization created last year to advocate for and strongly support business and employment development and growth in this part of the state was profiled by its executive director, Matt Bell of Avilla, at a meeting in Decatur on Monday,
    Bell, who guides the Regional Chamber of Northeast Indiana (RCNI), addressed some 30 people at a luncheon gathering at Woodcrest Retirement Community. He is a former member of the Indiana House of Representatives who left office to take the RCNI position.

Tope dies in prison at age 58

    Ernest R. "Dick" Tope, a former Decatur resident serving a life sentence for the 1974 murder of a Van Wert County, Ohio, teenager, has died in prison.
    Tope, 58, died of lung cancer last week in Pendleton Correctional Facility in central Indiana, according to a report in Thursday's Van Wert Times-Bulletin.

    NEW CASTLE—Bellmont coach Craig Krull has always espoused the theory that his team will only get better by playing the better teams in volleyball and the Squaws moved to 11-4 this weekend by splitting a pair of games with ranked foes in the annual New Castle Invitational.

    SPENCERVILLE, OHIO—South Adams captured three of the top 11 places in the 35th annual Spencerville Bearcat Cross Country Invitational Saturday and was narrowly edged out of first place by Shawnee (Ohio) by a 49 to 69 county.

Paula E. Hockemeyer

    Paula E. Hockemeyer, 93, of Decatur, died at 1:50 a.m. Sunday in the nursing center at Woodcrest Retirement Community.
    She was born on October 11, 1917, in Allen County to Henry J. and Augusta Gick Nahrwold.
    She married Walter Hockemeyer on January 22, 1941, in St. Paul Lutheran Church (Gar Creek); he passed away on November 16, 1991.
    She was a homemaker and a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church (Fuelling).

Pauline M. Lehman

    Pauline M. Lehman, 86, of Berne, passed away on Saturday, September 10, in Parkview Hospital at Fort Wayne.
    She was born to Albert and Eva Liddy Huser on February 21, 1925, in Adams County.
    She married Maynard "Miz" Lehman on July 30, 1944, he survives.
    She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who always put her family first.

Ferne A. Painter

    Ferne Alta Painter, 92, of Fort Wayne, passed away on Saturday, September 10, 2011, at Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne.
    Born in Adams County, Ferne worked at General Electric for 39 years, retiring in 1979.
    She graduated from Monroeville High School 1937.
    She was a member of First Assembly of God Church, the GE Elex Club, and the GE Quarter-Century Club.
    Surviving are several nieces and nephews.

Local MDA collections top $3,600

    More than $3,600 was contributed from five sources in Adams County this year to add to the national Muscular Dystrophy Association fund drive.
    Collections were held last weekend by members of the Decatur Moose Lodge and the Monroe Fire Department. Decatur firefighters held their collection a week earlier.
    The finals totals are as follows:
    • $1,724.04, Decatur Fire Department.
    • $724.04, Decatur Moose Lodge 1311.
