Rex E. Bovine, 75, of Decatur, died at his residence on Thursday, August 4, 2011.
Rex was the son of William E. and Jeanette (Hunt) Bovine. He was born on March 24, 1936, in Adams County.
Rex worked for Zollner Piston Co. in Fort Wayne for 38 years and retired in 1998. He served his country in the United States Army from 1954-1956 and was a member of American Legion Post 43, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6236, and Elks Lodge 993, all of Decatur.
Larry L. Couch, 68, of Union City, Ohio, passed away on Saturday, August 6, 2011, in Union City Care Center after a short illness.
He was born on November 25, 1942, in Bainbridge, Ohio, to Grant and Vivian Elliott Couch, who are deceased.
He worked for Applegate Steel and Fence Co. and was also a carpenter.
William H. Via, 90, of Portland, died on Thursday in Persimmon Ridge Healthcare.
He was born to Walter and Ruth Collier Via.
Among survivors are his wife, Pauline; a daughter, Mrs. Bill (Linda) Zimmerman of Portland; and two sons, Dennis Via of Decatur and Danny Via of Monticello, Kentucky.
A private family funeral service will be held, with burial in Salamonia Cemetery. Visiting hours are 1-3 p.m. Sunday in Baird-Freeman Funeral Home, Portland.
Brock Steven Walker of Decatur was stillborn at 5:44 a.m. Friday in Lutheran Hospital at Fort Wayne.
He was born on August 5 in Fort Wayne to Kyle and Mercy Klarke Walker, who live in Decatur.
Other survivors are two brothers, Jack and Holt Walker, at home; the maternal grandmother, Angela R. Klarke of Bluffton; and the paternal grandparents, Rev. Steven and Nancy Walker of Fort Wayne.
A private family service will be held at Zwick and Jahn Funeral Home, Decatur.
Rose Ann H. Wengerd, 46, of rural Geneva, died on Sunday at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne.
She was born on September 18, 1964, in Adams County to Ben and Lovina Hilty Schwartz, who live in rural Monroe.
A would-be robber reportedly was in stable condition this morning after he was shot during a hold-up attempt at approximately 2 p.m. Sunday at the CVS pharmacy in Berne.
A three-line press release issued by the Berne Police Department said only that an off-duty officer responded to the store following a report of an attempted armed robbery and that "shots were fired." Police Chief Tim Taylor told Fort Wayne television outlets the shots were exchanged in the store's pharmacy counter.
The dry spell in Decatur took a big hit over the weekend, with over an inch and a half of rain recorded at the city weather station.
Weather station officials say they measured 1.06 of an inch on Saturday and another .6 of an inch on Sunday.
Berne recorded .77 of an inch of rain over the weekend, and Geneva had .54, according to reports.
Wells County officials have announced that they filed information with the Wells County Circuit Court to change the charge of reckless homicide, a class C felony, to murder in the case against Bruce Pond, 46, Ossian.
Pond was arrested shortly after four year-old Jacob Michuda, also of Ossian, was shot to death while fishing with his father at a Wells County pond on the evening of July 22.
The Decatur City Golf Championship was held at the Cross Creek Golf Club in Decatur over the weekend with Keith Blythe and Brenda Shifferly continuing their domination of local play.
Local golf legend Shifferly notched her 16th city championship with a one-stroke victory over Missy Ainsworth while Blythe won the Men’s City Division shooting a 66 and 68, a 10-under par 134 score for both days.
Normally a team that loses three seniors to division one college program would be labeled as being one going into a rebuilding year.
Don't tell that to Bellmont volleyball coach Craig Krull, however, as the veteran spike coach is optimistic about his 2011-12 team that will hit the floor in less than two weeks against Bishop Dwenger in its attempt to start its defense of the 2010 class 3A state championship title.
