Trial is staying in Wells

    A request by an Ossian man, charged with murdering a neighbor boy last July, to have his case moved outside of Wells County has been turned down by Wells Circuit Court Judge Kent Kiracofe.
    The judge ruled that there has not been excessive publicity about the case and that an impartial jury could be selected at a trial.
    Bruce Pond is accused of firing a gun toward a light on a dock on a pond at night on July 22. The shot killed four-year-old Jacob Michuda, who was fishing with his father.

River crests at 19.9

    The St. Marys River crested at 19.9 feet in Decatur late Wednesday morning and was receding very slowly this morning.
    City weather station officials said this morning that the river stood at 19.8 feet at 7 a.m. today. Although its flood stage is 17 feet, the river causes no significant problems until it passes 20 feet.

    Sandra Joan Schuller Gaskill, 75, of Celina, Ohio, passed away at 6:50 a.m. on Wednesday, November 30, 2011, at Adams Memorial Hospital in Decatur.
    She was born on Thursday, October 29, 1936, in Montpelier, Indiana, to William Simon and Elizabeth Minniear Schuller.
    Mrs. Gaskill was formerly employed by Magnavox Corp, in Fort Wayne.
    She was a 1954 graduate of Montpelier High School and a former resident of Montpelier and Decatur.

All-ACAC teams announced for football

    The ACAC All-Conference football teams were released today with three-peat ACAC champion Leo Lions leading the way with six members on the first team. The Starfires of South Adams had five members on the first team, while Garrett and Heritage each had four.  Adams Central, Bluffton, and Woodlan added two from their squads.

AC boys, SA girls win in county pool battle

    BERNE—Two nearly identical scores were posted in swim matches between county rivals Adams Central and South Adams Tuesday night at the SA pool with the Adams Central boys team earning a 111-61 triumph while the South Adams girls raced to a 109-60 victory.
    In the win for the AC boys, Gavin Kaehr recorded two new Adams Central school records in the meet. Kaehr notched a 2:18.40 swim in the 200 IM to win that race by over eight seconds. He had respective splits of :26.85, :35.63, :42.73, and :33.19 for his new mark.

Season’s first snowfall mixed with high water

    And it's not even December yet.
    Decatur and Adams County residents, along with much of northeastern Indiana, got a double dose of weather Tuesday, rain being followed by the first snowfall of the season.
    So, this morning, the St. Marys River was up, streets and roads were slick, and most schools were closed.
    Meanwhile, the Berne Fire Department pulled a driver from some high water early Tuesday evening.

IPFW prof entertains at AC

    Although he didn't look like a college professor during much of his appearance at Adams Central on Tuesday, Dr. Lowell Madden of the Indiana-Purdue campus in Fort Wayne was right in his element as a magician and a proponent of using famous books by Dr. Seuss to enlighten children.
    He performed for more than 80 second graders at AC's elementary school.
    Before he put on the Cat in the Hat outfit, the professor performed a magic trick involving an egg in a glass on someone's head.

Shop is lost to fire

    In the midst of snow and chilly conditions, Decatur firefighters spent some four hours on Tuesday battling a fire at Woodpecker & Son, a large workshop located three or four miles north of Decatur.
    The building was destroyed by the blaze.
    The woodshop is owned by John Yoquelet and is located at 10063 N. County Road 100 West.
    A fire department spokesman this morning estimated the building to have been 30 by 60 feet.

Walter H. Biedermann

    Walter H. Biedermann, 80, of Palm Coast, Florida, formerly of Decatur, died on November 12, 2011, at his residence.
    Walter was born in Mannheim, Germany on August 22, 1931, to Heinrich and Hermine Konig Biedermann.
    He married Helen Joan Johnson, who survives.
    Walter lived in Decatur for 43 years and lived in Florida the past 10 years.
    Walter attended St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Decatur and was a member of the Lutheran Church in Mannheim.

‘Heavy’ weight shift will likely translate into a heap of forfeits

    How's the new weight class switch, adding a heavier weight class for 2011-12 while taking out a middle class, working out after just one week of wrestling?
    Well, in Saturday's Super Dual at Yorktown, Bellmont senior Isaac Birch, in the new 220-pound class, received three forfeits. South Adams went 5-0 at Homestead, but had to forfeit the 195-pound class in every meet. There were other forfeits at both sites in various meets at 182 and heavyweight.
