    Taylor Kennedy scored the first and last goal Thursday in  Bellmont's loop showdown with Columbia City and the defense held up late for a 4-3 Squaws' win over the Eagles.
    It was the fourth win without a loss for the Squaws.

West Nile found in mosquitos in Berne

    West Nile Virus has been found in some mosquitos in Berne.
    Berne officials, quoting reports by an official from the Indiana Department of Health, and Terry Smith, the superintendent of the Adams County Health Department, made the announcement on Thursday.
    The fact that West Nile Virus has appeared in Berne "means that residents should limit the possibility of being bitten by an infected mosquito by applying repellants and making lifestyle modifications," the Berne statement said.

    It took two cranes, two containers, and two men to begin the process of bringing down a tall chimney at St. Joseph Catholic School in Decatur on Wednesday.
    One container held two workers from the Martin firm of Fort Wayne and the other held the bricks that the men removed from the aging chimney.
    The process resumed on Thursday and will take the chimney down to the roof of the school, at Fourth and Monroe Sts., near downtown.

Bennett proposes state’s takeover of five schools

    INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indiana’s top education official proposed Thursday that the state assume control of four troubled high schools and a middle school in what would be the state’s first takeover of underperforming public schools under a 1999 law.

    Charles S. DeKoninck, 76, of Monroeville, died at 2:45 p.m. Wednesday at The Village of Heritage nursing home.
    He married Shirley A. Sorg on August 31, 1957, in St. Joseph Catholic Church at Hessen Cassel; she passed away on September 14, 2001.
    He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church at Hessen Cassel, a lifelong farmer (including dairy cattle), and the previous co-owner of Sunshine Florist in Decatur for 23 years (1981 to 2004).

Dale R. Workinger

    Dale R. Workinger, 76, of Berne, formerly of Monroe, died on Wednesday at Swiss Village Retirement Community.
    He was born on November 26, 1934, in Adams County to Glenn and Mary Wechter Workinger.
    Surviving are a brother, Charles E. Workinger of Monroe, and several nieces and nephews.
    The funeral service will be held Sunday at 7 p.m. in Swiss Village, with calling from 5-7 p.m. Burial will be in Ray Cemetery, rural Monroe.

    Dale R. Workinger, 76, of Berne, a former resident of Portland, died on Thursday at Swiss Village Retirement Community.
    Funeral arrangements are pending at Haggard-Sefton and Hirschy Funeral Home, Decatur.

Wendell L. Abbott

    Wendell Lloyd Abbott, 85, of Decatur, died at 2 p.m. Tuesday at home of Parkinson's Disease, following an extended illness.
    He was born on August 22, 1926, in Adams County to Clark C. and Lola L. Gerber Abbott.
    He married Imogene M. McFarland on November 7, 1953, in Decatur; she survives.

Micah L. Farmer

    Micah Louise Farmer, 34, of Decatur, died at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in Hospice Home on Homestead Rd. in Fort Wayne.
    She was born on September 4, 1976, in Terre Haute to Michael W. and Karen M. Reynolds Wing.
    Micah was a social worker for Meridian Services at Richmond. She attended the Indiana-Purdue campus in Fort Wayne, Ball State University in Muncie, and the Indiana-Purdue campus in Indianapolis and received a master's degree in social work.

    Menno W. Schwartz, 82, of rural Monroe, died at home on Wednesday.
    He was born on August 21, 1929, in Adams County to Joe L. and Elizabeth Wickey Schwartz.
