Mounted animals, birds, and fish, plus animal pelts, will be part of the pageantry as the City of Decatur celebrates its 175th anniversary on August 18-28.
The free display of mounted creatures will be held in Riverside Center on Saturday, August 27, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with setup time the day before, from 3-6 p.m.
Local taxidermist Dick Beard will show off an elk he mounted that stands nine feet tall (counting its antlers), plus an antelope, a bobcat, a mule deer, and a white-tailed deer.
Rod Mosser, a former coach and teacher at South Adams, Adams Central and Bluffton high schools, has announced his candidacy for the District 3 seat on Berne City Council.
Mosser, a Democrat, said he looks forward to using his education and work experience to help move Berne forward.
The District 3 seat is currently held by first-term Republican Mark Wynn.
Hoagland Days opens Thursday and will run through Saturday in Hoagland Park, sponsored by the Hoagland-Area Advancement Association.

Bruce A. Garwood, 55, of Decatur, died on Wednesday at Adams Memorial Hospital.
Funeral arrangements are pending at Haggard-Sefton and Hirschy Funeral Home, Decatur.
Jean Lautzenheiser, 85, of Berne, passed away at 11:40 p.m. on Wednesday, June 8, 2011, at Swiss Village Retirement Community.
She was born on Sunday, July 5, 1925, in Adams County to Elmer and Minnie Burk Stuber.
Mary Jean was a graduate of Jefferson High School in Adams County and a member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Bryant.
FORT WAYNE — Bellmont High School senior Brandon Voglewede has selected the University of Saint Francis to continue his baseball career and education.
A 9-run fifth helped Kintz Insurance go to 9-1 with a 16-4 win over Hull Lift Trucks Thursday in H.E.B.A. Mays play, while Bixler Insurance downed Decatur Dental 9-5.
Ethan Corral doubled with three hits and 2 RBI and Noah Macklin stroked an inside-the-park home run with 3 hits and 4 RBI to pace the Kintz win. Payton Boyd had 3 hits with 2 RBI while Liam Adams had 2 hits and 1 RBI, as did Josh Price.
Kobe Ortiz had 2 hits for Hull.
Agreements were finalized Thursday evening between North Adams Community Schools and Ivy Tech Community College and IPFW as one of the final steps necessary to transform Bellmont High School into one of the few Early College High Schools in the state of Indiana.
A brief ceremony was held in the school district's administrative office as officials from Ivy Tech and the Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne campus signed a Memorandum Of Understanding to accept college credits earned by students at Bellmont.
Bellmont senior Dana Kaczmarek, a three-year starter for Bellmont behind the plate, has named to the All-NHC softball team, given second-team status, in a poll of the loop coaches.
Kaczmarek was the only Bellmonter named to the team. She recently was named the Hebble Award winner at Bellmont.
Samantha Agulair of Homestead was named first team catcher. Kaczmarek was named second team, and Kayla Northrup of DeKalb was given honorable mention.
It won't be soon and it may not even be this year, but in the not-too-distant future the City of Decatur is going to have something it's never had before: a redevelopment commission.
Decatur City Council started the ball rolling at its meeting Tuesday night and while Mayor John Schultz said "there is no rush," the mayor and council members seemed enthusiastic about beginning the process.
