City to play wait game on key grant

    Having taken the latest step in seeking a grant to rid the city of a hazardous eyesore, Decatur officials are now mostly relegated to a waiting game, hoping to hear good news before the end of the year.
    Prior to Tuesday night's city council meeting, the second of two required public hearings was held on the city's bid for a $456,850 grant to take down and clean up the ancient former street department — and onetime city light — building located just west of the city police headquarters.

Moment of silence opens Geneva council’s meeting

    Prior to conducting regular business, everyone present at the Geneva Town Council meeting on Tuesday sat in silence for a moment to honor and remember Rosie Puterbaugh. Puterbaugh served as the town's deputy clerk-treasurer for many years until her death from heart surgery complications last Friday.

    Thomas J. Alberding, 51, of Decatur, died on Monday, September 5, 2011, at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne.
    Tom was born in Decatur, Indiana, on July 28, 1960, to Leo W. and Mary L. (Geimer) Alberding.
    On July 30, 2010, he married Sara E. Webb.
    Tom was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Decatur and its Holy Name Society. He also was a member of Knights of Columbus Chapter 864 in Decatur, of which he was a past Grand Knight.

Melvin Whitesel

    Melvin “Dean” Whitesel, 85, of Fort Wayne, died at 3:15 a.m. on September 3, 2011.
    Born on July 19, 1926, in Richvalley, Indiana, he was the son of Paul and Ethyl L. (Harwood) Whitesel.
    He married Wilma May Clark of North Manchester on January 28, 1946; she died on March 23, 2008.
    He attended school at Linlawn of Wabash County and later went to Purdue University at Fort Wayne.

SA, Jets, Squaws all snare volleyball wins

    All three Adams County schools were victorious on the volleyball court Tuesday night with both Adams Central and South Adams opening their ACAC seasons with triumphs and Bellmont visiting North Side in Fort Wayne for a three-game sweep.
    Chelsea Bollenbacher and Lily Taing provided the momentum for South Adams enroute to a 25-22, 25-9, 25-22 win over Southern Wells.

AC netters clip Stars 3-2

    MONROE—County rivals Adams Central and South Adams squared off on the tennis courts at AC Tuesday night and the Jets swept the doubles competition to squeeze out a 3-2 win over the Starfires in an ACAC  varsity match.

Decatur man given 12-year prison term

September 6, 2011

    A Decatur man who pleaded guilty to burglary and six counts of theft received a 12-year prison sentence on Friday from Adams Circuit Court Judge Frederick A. Schurger.
    Gary R. Williams Jr., 24, pleaded guilty to burglarizing a house in Decatur on April 17, stealing a dirt bike from a Decatur business on April 2 and stealing gasoline from two Decatur stations on April 24 and May 12.

United Way kickoff next week

    The 2011 campaign of the United Way of Adams County will open with a luncheon next Wednesday, September 7, at 11:30 a.m. in the South Adams Boys' and Girls' Club at Berne.
    The program will include the announcement of this year's monetary goal to aid 32 local are area organizations and agencies, plus viewing the campaign's promotional video.
    Also scheduled is the recognition of the 32 recipients of United Way funds as well as the United Way board and 2011 campaign team.

    Now that the Kekionga Festival and the 175th Anniversary Celebration is over, it's time to think ... why, Callithumpian, of course.
    And the first announcement from Decatur's Callithumpian Committee about the city's annual fall festival, which will run from October 20-31, has been issued.
    The announcement lists three early deadlines.

    Thomas J. Alberding, 51, of Decatur, died on Monday in Lutheran Hospital at Fort Wayne.
    Funeral arrangements are pending at Haggard-Sefton and Hirschy Funeral Home, Decatur.
