Jerry L. Tharp Sr.

November 7, 2011

    Jerry L. "J.T." Tharp Sr., 72, of Decatur, passed away on Saturday, November 5, 2011, at Englewood Health and Rehabilitation Center in Fort Wayne.
    He was born on March 22, 1939, in Ridgeville, Indiana, to Roe and Frances Wooters Tharp.
    He married Mariana M. Jauregui on June 29, 1957.

Bellmont still celebrating second sectional championship

    "This was something else. I don't know what to say," said Bellmont's standout runningback Cody Walters minutes after the Braves won just their second sectional football championship ever, 21-20 in overtime at Western High School Friday night.
    "The whole game was hard-hitting, but we never stopped, never gave in, and we got it done," said determined senior linebacker Dewey Melcher.

Ben Baker is Athlete of the Weeke

    Without solid line play on both sides of the ball, football teams seldom are successful.
    In Bellmont's outstanding 22-7 sectional win over Yorktown last Friday, Ben, as usual, played on both offense and defense.
    Offensively, Baker and Co. opened up holes that allowed BHS backs to gain 235 rushing yards while on defense, Baker was hounding the Tigers all night with seven and a half tackles, three and a half of which were tackles for loss of yardage. He also had one and a half sacks.

    It's championship Friday for Adams County high school football!
    Ain't it grand!
    "Hopefully, all three teams will play well and win. That would be a first. That would be crazy," stated Adams Central football coach Michael Mosser, whose Jets will be seeking a 17th sectional crown for the tradition rich Class A school tonight when North Miami comes to Central's field.

Monroe eyes water rate hike

    Monroe Town Council President Al Lehman unveiled a proposal for an average 18.5 percent increase in monthly water rates for the community at the council's November meeting held Thursday night.
    He proposed an amendment to the water rate ordinance and said it would be formally drawn up in time for a public hearing on the matter at the council's December 1 meeting.

Berne man accidentally shoots himself

      A resident of N. Jefferson St. in Berne apparently accidentally shot himself early Thursday afternoon.
    Dennis Raesner, 65, was reported in fair condition this morning at Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne. 
    According to reports, he had a gun in his back pocket and it went off, striking him in the back or side. Raesner was rushed by EMS to Adams Memorial Hospital, when the Samitarian helicopter was called.

Mayor Praises Callithumpian

    Mayor John Schultz expressed at this week's city council meeting his obviously sincere appreciation to the many local volunteers and emergency personnel who made the recent Callithumpian parade and festival a huge success.
    The mayor pointed to the Callithumpian Committee, the police department and street department. And he also noted the city's fire department, which brewed up 70 gallons of chili to sell on parade night.

Vera C. Ahne

    Vera C. Heimann Ahne, 86, of Scranton, Arkansas, passed away in Clarksville, Arkansas, on October 21, 2011.
    She was born in Decatur on May 6, 1925 to Henry and Rose Geels Heimann.
    She is survived by nine children, 24 grandchildren, and 34 great-grandchildren.
    Local survivors are a brother, Cletus Heimann (and wife Dorothy) of Monroeville; a sister, Marjorie Shell of rural Decatur; a sister-in-law, Rita Heimann of rural Decatur; and several nieces and nephews.

Otto A. Spiegel

    Dr. Otto Arnold Spiegel, 87, of Sebring, Florida, a former chiropractor in Decatur and known as "Dr. O.A." in Sebring, passed away at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in Lake Placid Nursing Home.
    He was born to Otto and Stella Spiegel in Indiana on February 4, 1924, and the family moved shortly after to Wisconsin, where he grew up.
    He joined the U.S. Navy in 1941 and was a radio operator at a secret military radio station overlooking Pearl Harbor during World War II.

Braves look to defense for win against Western

    While Bellmont was still basking in a little playoff glory on Wednesday, coming off that impressive sectional semi-final win over Yorktown, the squad was turning its eyes on 9-2 Western, Friday's sectional championship game foe.
    The game will be played at 7 p.m. at Russiaville (near Kokomo). It will be Bellmont's fourth sectional championship contest over the past five seasons.
