Hot start for 4-H Fair

    Adams County's 2011 4-H Fair opened Sunday at the Monroe fairgrounds and it seems destined to be one of the hottest in years.
    A National Weather Service meteorologist in Indianapolis said a heat wave expected to crest this week will likely linger for several days.
    According to meteorologist Dave Tucek, the weather service expects the heat wave to drag on until at least July 25. An excessive heat watch has been issued for Tuesday through at least Saturday.

Thunderbirds sweep five

    The Decatur Thunderbirds played in the second annual Don Osborn Willshire 10 and Under tournament this past weekend and swept all five games they played for the championship title.
    In pool play games, the T-Birds blanked Patrick Henry of Ohio 9-0 on Friday, and on Saturday knocked off Rockford, Ohio 7-5 and Van Wert, Ohio 18-0. In the elimination round Saturday, Decatur fashioned a big 19-1 triumph over Van Wert and then whipped Patrick Henry again by a 12-2 count in the championship encounter.

Music at Geneva historic site

     Despite temperatures which eclipsed 90 degrees on Sunday, some two dozen musicians and even more spectators braved the elements to enjoy an afternoon of bluegrass and gospel music at the Limberlost State Historic Site in Geneva.
    The Bluegrass Jams are held monthly throughout the summer in a shaded area just outside the cabin that served as the former home of author and naturalist Gene Stratton-Porter.
    Although no admission is charged, monetary donations will be accepted.

Marshalls named for 4-H parade

    Adams County 4-H and extension service officials have announced that Mark and Jeanene Neuenschwander of rural Berne have been chosen as grand marshalls for the 2011 Adams County 4-H Fair Parade.
    The parade will start at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, July 19, in Monroe.
    The Neuenschwanders have a combined total of 32 years of service as Adams County 4-H volunteers: 17 years for Jeanene and 15 years for Mark. They are currently the Wabash Cloverleaf 4-H Club leaders.

Erie Haven holds off McIntire in 2nd game for Koufax crown

    Erie Haven added the Adams-Wells Koufax Tourney title to its regular-season crown, but it took a little longer than they had hoped Tuesday in the championship round.
    McIntire Heating & Air handed Erie Haven it's first loss of the season in the title round opener Thursday night, but the Mixers gathered themselves in the middle of the second game and took the lead on a triple by Trace Bauer in the bottom of the fifth and went on to score a 7-4 victory, capping a 19-1 season.

Mind’s Eye takes out Geimer for Senior title

    The Mind's Eye Graphics girls softball team claimed the championship of the Decatur Girls Senior League tournament Thursday night after knocking off Geimer Construction for the second time this week by a score of 16-8.
    The Graphics beat Geimer's 6-4 on Tuesday night forcing the Builders to come back with a 16-10 triumph over Barker and Sons Wrecker Service on Wednesday to earn a berth in the final game.

Indiana ends budget year with $1.2B surplus

    INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — After a year of spending cuts to state agencies and school districts, during which state workers were asked to do more than ever, Indiana released its final budget numbers for the fiscal year that showed it sitting on a $1.2 billion surplus.
    State Auditor Tim Berry called the state workers who bore most of those budget cuts via greater workloads, ‘‘heroes.’’

9 seeking title of ambassador

    Nine longtime members of Adams County 4-H are seeking the title of Royal Ambassador at the county 4-H Fair, which opens Sunday at the Monroe fairgrounds. The winner will be announced after the parade on Tuesday night.
    The nine are: Marissa Scheumann, Megan Hreha, Audra Franz, Devan Barger, Hannah Conrad, Paul Mesing, Zan Smith, Macy Mudd, and Casey Krueckeberg. Following are sketches of each candidate:

Holly Hankenson dominates USA Track heptathlon; Nationals next

    Holly Hankenson likes variety, and that makes the standout Bellmont athlete the perfect fit for the track helptathlon.
    She not only likes the varied events, but she proved she's pretty good at all of them in the recent Region 7 USA Track Meet as she stormed through the 16-annd-under division, compiling 4,084 points. She stunningly won six of the seven events, and was second only in the 200 meter dash. The second place total score was 701 points short of her tally.

McIntire rallies by Corner Deli

    Josh Brune raced home from third base with the winning run Wednesday night in the bottom of the seventh on a fielder's choice by Parker Zeser and the McIntire Heating and Air Conditioning squad earned a 5-4 decision in the final game of the loser's bracket of the Sandy Koufax League double-elimination tournament over Monroe Country Corner Deli at Worthman Field.
