DOE asks info on first bid for elected board

    North Adams Board of Education Attorney Scott Ainsworth told board members at a meeting on Tuesday that he received a history lesson after researching a letter he recently received from the Indiana Department of Education. The education department is in the process of reviewing a petition filed by a group of local residents that would change the method of seating North Adams school board members from the current appointment process to a seven-member elected board.

Teen gets 14 years for molesting

    A 17-year-old Decatur boy who pleaded guilty on September 2 to two counts of child molesting received a pair of concurrent 14-year prison sentences on Tuesday from Adams Circuit Court Judge Frederick A. Schurger.
    Patrick M. Scott, who admitted engaging in sexual intercourse early this year with two 12-year-old girls, was handed the sentence. Two other molesting charges, one each involving the same girls, were dismissed.

    Nancy L. Scherry, 82, of rural Decatur, died at 4:45 a.m. Tuesday in Adams Memorial Hospital.
    She was born on July 11, 1929, in Culver, Indiana, to Rev. F.I. and Laura F. Braunschweiger Willmert.
    She married Rolland F. Scherry on September 26, 1953, in Faith United Methodist Church at Fort Wayne; he survives. Nancy and Rolland were married by her father and brother.

Adeline A. Schuller

    Adeline A. "Addy" Schuller, 65, of rural Decatur, a teacher for many years, died on Monday at home after suffering an aneurysm last Friday.
    She was born to Walter and Ludella Fuelling Wiese, who are deceased.
    Among survivors are her husband, Dennis Schuller; two daughters, Mrs. Brad (Christine) Biggs of Decatur and Robin Schuller of Ohio City, Ohio; and a son, Dan Schuller of Fishers.

Louise Hoover Burk

    Louise Hoover Burk, 94, formerly of York, Pennsylvania and Decatur, died at Luther Acres Manor in Lititz, Pennsylvania, on Sunday.
    She was the widow of Jacob T. Hoover Sr. and G. Thomas Burk.
    A memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family.
    Rohland Funeral Home of Lebanon, Pennsylvania, handled the arrangements.

Liechty, Shane finish one-two at Spencerville

    SPENCERVILLE, OHIO—A strong finish by the South Adams boys cross country team at the Spencerville Invitational last Saturday including a one-two finish by Evan Liechty and Brody Shane helped South Adams claim the team championship with just 56 points out of 18 teams.

Lee recovering; in fair condition

    Longtime Adams Health Network surgeon and general practitioner physician H. S. Lee is currently recovering at Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne after suffering an acute medical problem at his residence last week.
    On Monday, Dr. Lee was listed in fair condition at Parkview, where he has continued to improve daily. The hospital has indicated that while cards and letters for him are welcome, visitors will be restricted to his immediate family.

Drugs are stolen in Walgreen break-in

    An unknown amount of drugs was stolen from the Walgreen store at 13th and Monroe Sts. early today.
    Decatur police said a break-in occurred at 2:28 a.m. when someone pried open a front door, took the drugs, then fled the scene.
    Officers from the city and the Adams County Sheriff's Department arrived at the store less than three minutes after the alarm sounded, but found no one there, according to the city department.

Area business backer profiled

    An organization created last year to advocate for and strongly support business and employment development and growth in this part of the state was profiled by its executive director, Matt Bell of Avilla, at a meeting in Decatur on Monday,
    Bell, who guides the Regional Chamber of Northeast Indiana (RCNI), addressed some 30 people at a luncheon gathering at Woodcrest Retirement Community. He is a former member of the Indiana House of Representatives who left office to take the RCNI position.
