Library Friends plan credit with plaque, display

    The board of directors of the Friends of the Library in Decatur has decided to place a plaque on the steel sculpture in front of Decatur branch of the Adams Public Library System (APLS) and wall display inside the library to credit all those involved with that work of art.
    Greg Mendez, a Decatur artist who works in metal, designed and made the sculpture, which sits on a concrete base donated by Decatur concrete contractor Jim Hitchcock.

    Mildred R. Elliott, 94, of Decatur, died at home on Monday.
    Funeral arrangements are pending at Haggard-Sefton and Hirschy Funeral Home, Decatur.

Flower fund failing

    The program that began more than 10 years ago to plant flowers annually in 27 large sidewalk planters in downtown Decatur is in a financial bind this year.
    Rev. Dan York, pastor of Grace Fellowship Church and the man who volunteered to oversee the project and keep the flowers looking good from May through October, reports that, for the first time, the project is short $1,200 to $1,500 in donations. Overall, the planter project costs $3,000 a year.

No flooding likely here at this time

    Having fallen substantially over the weekend, the St. Marys River was on the rise in Decatur again today. But, at this time, no major flooding is expected.
    Local weather station officials were informed by the National Weather Service this morning that the St. Marys is expected to crest here at 18.7 feet around 1 a.m. Friday.
    The river's flood stage is 17 feet, but it causes no significant flooding problems until surpassing 20 feet.

Changes under way downtown

    One longtime business has relocated and another will be expanding in connected decisions announced this week.
    The changes involve Charlie Brune, owner of Complete Printing Service at 210 S. Second St. since 1992, and Wendell Beer, a barber here for 52 years, much of that time in The Hair-Cut Center at 216 S. Second St., next to Brune's firm. Brune was Beer's landlord.

Jets win over Parkway

    ROCKFORD, Ohio––A game that Adams Central coach Aaron McClure called "ugly" because it lacked the offensive flow his team displayed in its first two outings still went AC's way at Parkway on Saturday.
    The 57-43 victory that made the Flying Jets 2-1 and left the Panthers 0-2 came as the two sides swapped 10-0 runs in the fourth period and featured more fireworks from Jet star Maverick Baumer.

Starfires 11-0 after sweep of Spencer Hayworth Invitational

    BERNE — South Adams dominated the Spencer Hayworth Invitational Saturday, rolling to 11-0 on the season by taking 57 of 70 matches in posting five convincing victories.
    In their biggest challenge of the day, the Starfires thumped Jay County 64-16, winning 11 of the 14 matches. Jay finished the day 4-1 and is now 11-2 on the season.

Mat Braves go 4-1 at New Castle

    NEW CASTLE — No. 19 New Palestine won the final three matches by fall, defeating Bellmont 42-33 Saturday at the New Castle Super Dual, and despite a loss to Pendleton Heights the Dragons earned the overall title by scoring the most points on the day.
    Eighth-rated Bellmont, now 9-2, defeated Pendleton Heights 33-31 and finished the day 4-1, in a three-way tie at the top. The Braves also downed New Castle 69-12, Franklin County 60-18 and Whiteland 81-0.

    Steven J. Geist, 60, of Fort Wayne, died December 1.
    He was born to John K. “Dick” and Edna B. (Cosby) Geist. 
    Survivors include two sisters, Sandy (Rodney) Funk of Roanoke and Susan (Larry) Smith of Elkhart; and two brothers, Larry (Judi) Geist of Fort Wayne and Ric (Bev) Geist (Bellmont choral director) of Fort Wayne. 

Ludella L. McDowell

    Ludella L. McDowell, 101, formerly of Decatur, passed away at 1:55 p.m. on Friday, December 2, 2011, at Swiss Village Retirement Community in Berne.
    She was born on November 27, 1910, in Berne to Benhardt and Dinah (Habegger) Lehman.
    She married John McDowell on March 23, 1979; he passed away on September 1, 1986.
