FW base facing possible closure

February 2, 2012

    FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) — The commander of Indiana Air National Guard’s 122nd Fighter Wing says the base in Fort Wayne is awaiting word on whether it will be one of military bases the Pentagon closes.
    The Journal Gazette reports that Col. David Augustine said at a news conference Wednesday that all he’s heard so far is media speculation. He says hopes to hear of a decision on Friday.

Organizers gearing up for Spotlight

    The Spotlight on Decatur Business and Community Expo will return to Bellmont Middle School on Saturday, March 10.
    As in previous years, organizers have announced, Spotlight will open with the WZBD Free Bingo, complete with prizes donated by area merchants.
    Following bingo will be the Rotary Community Auction where many items, donated by Rotarians and local merchants, are offered for sale to the highest bidder. The auction will be conducted by ABC Realty and Auctioneers. 

Ag Extravaganza No. 5 held here

    The Adams County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) recently held its fifth annual Ag Extravaganza, at the Mirage Banquet Hall in Decatur.
    According to a news release, items discussed included financial reports, elections, and awards for the Pork Producers, Farm Bureau, and the SWCD.
    Some highlights of the evening included the following:
    • Luke Liechte received the 2011 Pork Producers Scholarship.

Cleo Naomi Augsburger

February 1, 2012

    Cleo Naomi (Wall) Augsburger, 88, of Berne, died Tuesday at Swiss Village.
    She was born to Hiram Clayton and May Esther (Harrison) Wall.
    Funeral services will be held Thursday at 10:30 a.m. in the Swiss Village Chapel, with visitation from 9 a.m. to time of services. Burial will be in the Evangelical Mennonite Cemetery, rural Berne.
    Arrangement were by Yager-Kirchhofer Funeral Home.

Wanda J. Crickmore

    Wanda J. Crickmore, 89, of Cincinnati, Ohio, passed away Friday, January 27, 2012.
        Wanda enjoyed her time traveling and a good cup of coffee. She was a loving mother and grandmother. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.    

57 high in city!

    On a January day when the normal high in the Decatur area is 33 degrees, the temperature soared to a top mark of 57 degrees at the city's weather station on Tuesday, bringing a preview of the springtime ahead.
    The National Weather Service at Fort Wayne recorded a high of 56, five degrees under the record high of 61 set in 1989.
    The Decatur weather station registered a low of 46 degrees early this morning — 13 degrees above the normal high! The normal low for January 31 is 18.

Elections chief White’s job on the line

    NOBLESVILLE, Ind. (AP) — Indiana’s top elections official signed documents showing he was living at an address different than one he listed on voting records, witnesses testified Tuesday as prosecutors began building their case in a trial that could cost Secretary of State Charlie White his job and his freedom.
    White faces charges of fraud, perjury and theft. A conviction on even one of the seven felony counts would force his removal from the politically powerful office.

Affolder seeks seat on council

    Former Adams County assessor Judy Affolder, a Democrat, has announced her candidacy for one of three at-large seats on the Adams County Council.
    Affolder is the third Democrat, and eighth candidate overall, to announce intentions to seek an at-large berth on the council. Other announced candidates include incumbents Dennis Bluhm and Randy Colclasure, both Republicans, along with fellow Republicans Rob Noetzel, Pat Norton and Tony Mellencamp. Other Democrats seeking election include John Minch and Robert Thomas.

Braves late comeback not enough against Cadets

    FT. WAYNE— From the time the Cadets of Concordia got the tip, swung the basketball to the corner for the three-point shot, and Marq Rogers stepped out of bounds negating the tri-fecta, Bellmont knew they had a shot. The omen proved to be just another case of "almost" for the Braves this season as they lost another heart-breaker to a more athletic foe in Condordia 69-60 on Tuesday night.

Lady Jets no trouble for Norwell

    MONROE—The Jessica Rupright and Company Road Show visited Adams Central Tuesday night and the state-ranked Norwell girls basketball team easily handled Adams Central by a 74-28 count in non-conference action.
    Rupright led a Norwell contingent that saw four Knights hit double figures on offense as Norwell hiked its record to 18-3 on the season. Rupright dominated the Jets inside as she hit 13-14 shots (she also missed  her only three-point shot) and posted all 26 of her points from the field.
