Flying Jets soar to ACAC title; Stars a close second

    MONROE — Adams Central earned four titles and placed 13 of 14 wrestlers to dominate the ACAC Wrestling Tourney Saturday, piling up 230.5 points to the 189.5 of second-place South Adams.
    The win gives the Jets both portions of the ACAC mat crown for the first time in seven years, and it was the first time for the wrestling double by fifth-year head coach Doug Schultz.
    "Our kids wrestled up to their ability, about as well as they possibly could," stated Schultz.

Braves suffer beat-down at Homestead

    FORT WAYNE— The Homestead Spartans had an off-night shooting the basketball against the Bellmont Braves, but because of 27 miscues, John Baker's tribe lost the game in what ended up as a laugher during their Saturday night NHC meeting that saw the final score, 71-39.
    The Braves shot a decent 40% from the field but only took 35 shots compared to Homestead's 62 shots hoisted. There was a big discrepancy in free throw shooting as well with the Spartans hitting 17-23 for the game and Bellmont making only five of eight.

Waneta A. Franz

     Waneta A. Franz, 87, of Decatur, passed away at 3:30 a.m. on Friday, January 20, 2012, in the Woodcrest Nursing Center located in Decatur.
    Waneta was born on Tuesday, April 29, 1924, in Adams County to the late Martin and Frieda (Bauermeister) Conrad.    She married the late Richard C. Franz on March 13, 1943, in Decatur. He passed away on September 23, 1998.

Wrestling meets delayed 2 hours

      Adams Central Athletic Director Rick Minnich noted Friday morning that the Allen County Athletic Conference Wrestling Tournament, slated for Adams Central on Saturday, has been delayed two hours and will begin at 11 a.m. because of the impending snow storm.
    That will set the finals back to about 4:15 p.m.
    Bellmont Athletic Director Dale Manis noted that the Northeast Hoosier Conference Wrestling Tournament, scheduled for Kendallville on Saturday at 9 am., has been delayed until 11 a.m. 

Bellmont takes pool pride over AC

    The Bellmont boys and girls swim team both recorded eight individual and three relay triumphs Thursday night enroute to posting solid wins over the Adams Central Jets at the BHS pool.
    In a meet before an SRO crowd,  Bellmont claimed all but one event in both matches with the boys racing to a 123-63 decision while the Squaws earned a 103-60 decision.

Wind test plan stirs big storm

    Tensions were high at Thursday night's Adams County Board of Zoning and Appeals meeting as a crowd gathered to hear the board's decision regarding a proposed wind test tower being constructed in Adams County.

Ex-Berne mayor eyes council seat

    John Minch, who recently ended an eight-year run as mayor of Berne, has announced his candidacy as a Democrat candidate for one of three at-large seats on the Adams County Council. Minch has filed the necessary paperwork to participate in the May primary election.

Second St. reopened after train derails

    This was the scene late Thursday morning as a train derailed just south of the Bunge North America location, closing the Second Street railroad crossing for several hours.
    The street reopened around 2:30 p.m. after a crew got the train back on the tracks.

Robert Paul Banks

January 20, 2012

    Robert Paul Banks died last Sunday, a day after his 72nd birthday, at his home in Corsicana, Texas.
    A graduate of Decatur High School and Tennessee Tech, he was a teacher and coach at Monmouth High School, Decatur Junior High and Southeast Elementary here until moving to Corsicana in 1981.
    Among survivors are his wife, Marsha; two children; and five stepchildren.
    Graveside services were held Wednesday in Corsicana. Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Ruth Margaret (Kimble) Beer

    Ruth Margaret (Kimble) Beer, 90, of Sycamore, died early Wednesday, January 18, 2012, in Kishwaukee Community Hospital. 
    She was born on Thursday, June 16, 1921 in Decatur, to Dwight and Ruth (Madden) Kimble. 
    She married Karl H. Beer on Nov. 29, 1950.  
    She was a member of The Federated Church in Sycamore.
