A fire that started in an attached garage spread to the one-story William and Carolyn Schindler home in Monroe on Wednesday evening, destroying both structures.
Neither of the occupants was injured, but all their belongings were lost, including two vehicles parked in the garage.
Monroe Fire Chief Russell Cook said this morning that the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
He also said the steady east wind created minor shingle damage to a neighboring home's roof.
Property taxes will be on time this year, Adams County Treasurer Rex Moore announced this week.

Despite first-high-school-meet jitters, a bone-chilling breeze and a tough Eastbrook opponent, Adams Central's new freshman girls track class did just fine Tuesday at the AC oval, taking five individual firsts and two more frosh were on the winning 3200 relay team in the 79-44 loss.
Junior weightman Troy Tonner fired career bests to win both the shot put and discus events Tuesday, scoring the only two firsts for the Jets as they opened the 2011 boys track season with a 91-32 loss to a strong Eastbrook squad.
Tonner tossed the shot 47' 3.5" to easily win the event, and he topped his previous best by almost three feet. In the discus, his winning toss of 143'8" was over five feet better than his previous best.
Edith M. Green, 93, a longtime resident of Monroe, died recently in El Paso, Texas.
Funeral arrangements are pending at Zwick and Jahn Funeral Home, Decatur.
A 116-year-old city-owned building has a wrecking ball in its future, and the sooner the better for Decatur Mayor John Schultz.
The mayor asked for and received permission from city council Tuesday night to seek a grant to demolish the huge, decaying building behind the Fifth St. police station and near the city swimming pool.
Robert Switzer, a senior at South Adams High School in Berne, has won a Lilly Endowment college scholarship.
The Lilly scholarship was announced by the Adams County Community Foundation (ACCF), which notes that such winners get full tuition to the Indiana college or university of his or her choice plus an $800 annual stipend to buy books and equipment.
Switzer will attend Goshen College to study pre-med and biology.
The value of this four-year scholarship is approximately $102,000.

Jo Ellen (Spann) Donaghy, 66, of Decatur and formerly of Bluffton, passed away at 11:27 p.m. on Sunday, April 3, 2011, at her home. She was surrounded by her family when she passed away.
Born on September 25, 1944, in Fort Wayne to Walter Henry and Florence Amelia (Scott) Halt, they preceded her in death.
Jo married J. Alan Spann in Liberty Mills, Indiana, in 1965; he preceded her in death on March 16, 2003. She married Larry L. Donaghy in Decatur on February 19, 2006; he survives.
B. Jerome Nussbaum, 95, of Berne, died Monday in Swiss Village Retirement Community.
He was born in Adams County on March 10, 1916, to Wilbert and Lila Sprunger Nussbaum.
Among survivors are a son, Gregg A. Nussbaum of Goshen; a brother, Paul Nussbaum of Berne; and a sister, Ruth Schwartz of Berne.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday in the chapel at Swiss Village, with burial in MRE Cemetery, rural Berne. Visiting hours are 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Friday in the chapel.
Rosanna R. Simon, 90, a resident of Berne, passed away at 1:25 a.m. Monday, April 4, 2011, at Swiss Village Retirement Community.
Rosanna was born on January 5, 1921 in Wells County, Indiana, the daughter of George and Daisy (Isnogle) Myers.
She married James Simon on March 19, 1938; he preceded her in death in 1975.
Rosanna was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Berne. She was a retired 25-year employee of Gifford’s IGA in Berne.
