The City of Decatur is banning the use of personal (private) fireworks this year until the current dry conditions ease, Mayor John Schultz said Monday afternoon. Berne has already imposed a fireworks ban.
The period in which it is legal to use fireworks in Decatur opens Friday and continues through the Fourth of July, but that is now negated.
Adams County instituted a ban on open burning a week ago.
The open burning ban will continue in Adams County indefinitely, according to Decatur Fire Chief Les Marckel.
Marckel told the Adams County Commissioners Monday that the sporadic rain received in the county last week was "nowhere near what we need" and that conditions have actually worsened.
"Each day we go without rain, we just need that much more to make any real difference," said Marckel. "I don't see this changing any time soon."
The city of Berne is on IDEM's clock once again.

Berne officials aren't happy with IDEM's recent announcement, calling it yet another "unfunded mandate."
