Scouts poppin’ to make sales

    Twelve Adams County Boy Scouts recently visited the Adams County Community Foundation (ACCF) as part of the annual “Troop and a Tour … for the Troops” project.
    Each Scout received a presentation about the historical aspects of the building and a professional overview of the purpose and mission of the foundation by Executive Director Coni Mayer.

James R. Borchers

    James R. Borchers, 91, of Decatur, passed away Saturday, September 8, 2012, at Christian Care Center in Bluffton.
    Jim was born on November 17, 1920, in Rockford, Ohio, to the late Glenn D. and Sophia M. (Schiller) Borchers.
     On August 28, 1947, he married Wanda G. (Priddy) Borchers; she survives in Decatur.
    Jim was a member of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church and a lifelong spiritual leader. He served the local Christian community in various capacities throughout his life.

Candido V. Castro Jr.

    Candido V. Castro Jr., 83, of Fort Wayne, died Thursday at his residence.
    Among survivors are his wife, Margot M. Castro of Fort Wayne; and two stepdaughters, Eva M. Torres and Aurea E. Hachett, both of Fort Wayne.
    Visitation will be from 1-4 p.m. on Sunday at Haggard-Sefton & Hirschy Funeral Home. A mass of Christian burial will be held at noon on Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 2213 Brooklyn Ave., Fort Wayne, with visitation from 10:30 a.m.-noon.

    Betty L. Moser, 83, Berne, died  today.
    Arrangements are pending at Yager-Kirchhofer Funeral Home.
 

Gretchen I. Pasternak

    Gretchen I. (Garwood) Pasternak, 54 of Decatur, died Friday at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne.
    Among survivors are her husband, Martin Pasternak of Decatur; three sons, Chris (Diane) Sutton and Leonard Sutton, both of Decatur; and Martin Pasternak Jr. of Gwinnett County, Ga.; and one daughter, Jinger Sandy Ann Pasternak of Gwinnett, Ga.
    A memorial visitation will be held from 2-3 p.m. today at Haggard-Sefton & Hirschy Funeral Home.

Mary O. Razo

    Mary O. Razo, 83, of Decatur, passed away on Sunday, September 9, 2012, at Woodcrest Nursing Center.
    She was born on September 9, 1929, in Paulding, Ohio, to the late Floyd and Carmen (Morales) Ortiz.
     On October 17, 1947, she married Genaro Razo; he died on October 11, 1996.
    Mary was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, where she was a member of the Hispanic Society and the Rosary Society. She worked as a homemaker.

Patricia A. Rumschlag

    Patricia A. Rumschlag, 67, of Decatur, passed away on Saturday, September 8, 2012, at her residence.
    Pat was born in Allen County on November 28, 1944, to Ralph and Doris (Anderson) Gerardot Jr.
    She married James M. Rumschlag on July 13, 1963.
    A member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, Pat had worked as a waitress at West End restaurant for 35 years before retiring on August 1, 2011.

Jets lose two-day affair with Garrett

    MONROE—Two potential scoring plays, about 16 hours apart, turned out to be the difference between victory and defeat in Adams Central's and Garrett's weather-elongated Homecoming game on Friday night and Saturday afternoon. Garrett came out the winner, 21-12.
    The visiting Railroaders won Day One, 21-0, and AC won Day Two, 12-0, but two missed scores by the Flying Jets were crucial: one on Friday just before the game was postponed due to lightning and the other on Saturday:

Squaws top Muncie Central at New Castle

    NEW CASTLE—This year's Squaws are a different type of challenge for coach Craig Krull, and Saturday's performance at the annual New Castle Invitational seemed to be a good barometer of Bellmont's post-season potential as they split a pair of matches against two of the toughest volleyball programs Indiana has to offer.

Braves win defensive struggle with Norwell

    Bellmont took advantage of a pair of breaks, driving for scores after the Norwell miscues to carve out a key 14-6 NHC victory over the Knights Friday night at Bob Worthman Stadium,  improving to 3-1 overall with three tough loop contests looming.
    The game somehow dodged the storm bullets and was over by 9 p.m., seconds before a huge bolt of lightening cut open the skies.
    "We did the things we needed to do to win," stated Bellmont's second-year head coach Larry Getts.
