    Dorothy E. Poling, 67, of Decatur, passed away at 5 p.m. on Monday, February 27, 2012, in the Woodcrest Nursing Center.
    Dorothy was born on Wednesday, March 8, 1944, in Van Wert County, Ohio, the daughter of the late Harold and Pauline (Foster) Hurless.
    Dorothy was a member of Cornerstone Community Church in Decatur and had worked at the Decatur Daily Democrat prior to a motorcycle accident in 1975.

McClure gets 100th win

    A total of 100 career wins and, more importantly, a 39-34 victory over Churubusco has Adams Central Coach Aaron McClure smiling after opening-night Sectional play at South Adams on Tuesday.
    The victory, the 100th of McClure's coaching career, sends the Jets into a Friday night contest against the host Starfires.
    About the 100th win, McClure, who is the middle school principal and a former science teacher, said he's enjoyed all 11 seasons and has had "a lot of fun."

Commissioners hear about drainage issues in Bobo

    Richard Lambert, a resident of Bobo, spoke with the Adams County Commissioners Monday regarding drainage issues on his property.
    According to Lambert, the problem began about three years ago when a neighbor, who was not named, allegedly had a broken tile on his property which was creating some minor flooding on the man's property.

Call wins bridge contest

    IPFW recently held its 22nd annual Engineers Week Model Bridge Contest, with 60 students from 13 northeast Indiana counties.
    Defending Champion Mason Call, a sophomore at Adams Central High School, once again took the Grand Prize with a bridge that topped 680 pounds, a new record.
    The purpose of the competition is to build the lightest, strongest bridge possible — with 200 popsicle sticks and wood glue.

Jets win first round defensive battle with ‘Busco

    BERNE—Thirty-nine for Adams Central meant 100 for Aaron McClure.
    In the opening game of the South Adams 2A sectional on Tuesday, the Flying Jets became the Grinding Jets as they played down to the much more deliberate, defensive-oriented style of Churubusco and pulled out a 39-34 victory.
    The win not only propelled the Jets into Friday's semi-final contest against the hosting Starfires, but also gave AC head coach McClure the 100th W of an 11-year career at his alma mater.

Measles case is confirmed in the county

    A new case of measles has been confirmed in Indiana and this one is in Adams County.
    An unvaccinated resident of the county was exposed to measles while traveling overseas, Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH) spokeswoman Amy Reel said late Monday afternoon.
    The case is unrelated to an outbreak in the Indianapolis metro area, she added.

Berne takes initial steps to Safe Routes to Schools

    Berne City Council on Monday evening authorized the execution of a pair of contracts with state highway officials as the first step in implementing the city's Safe Routes To School program.
    Berne last fall was named as a recipient of more than $300,000 in transportation department grant funding to implement the national program, which provides planning grants through the U.S. Department of Transportation for programs designed to encourage students to take part in a healthier lifestyle by walking and biking to school.

Tackett gets 10-year term years in prison

    ELKHART, Ind. (AP) — A former Indiana State Police post commander has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to stealing more than $91,000 in state money.
    The Elkhart Truth reports that an Elkhart Superior Court judge sentenced former Indiana Toll Road post commander Dallard Tackett to 20 years in prison on Monday, with 10 years suspended.

Rev. Fr. Lawrence Heiman

    Rev. Fr. Lawrence Heiman, C.PP.S., 94, of St Charles Center in Carthagena, Ohio, passed away on Sunday, February 26, 2012.    Fr. Larry was born on August 24, 1917, in Decatur, to the late John and Anna Heimann. 
    He was a member of the order of the Missionaries of the Precious Blood and was a Dr. of Music and Art at St. Joseph's College in Rensselaer, Ind.

    Dorothy E. Poling, 67, of Decatur, died at 5 p.m., Monday at the Woodcrest Nursing Center.
    Arrangements are pending at Zwick and Jahn Funeral Home.
