Jack G. Petrie, 77, of Midlothian, Virginia, a former Decatur resident, died in Virginia on April 6.
Among survivors are his wife, Molly, and three daughters: Julie Brown, Mrs. Allen (Laurie) Price, and Mrs. Scott (Betsy) Gettig.
A memorial service was held on April 9 in Virginia.
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Republican Gov. Mitch Daniels on Thursday signed into law a plan giving Indiana the nation’s most sweeping private school voucher program, and work is now beginning to make the plan a reality for thousands of Indiana parents.
Carroll hurler Steve Remesnik scattered five hits, striking out three with four walks, leading the 4A No. 4 Chargers to a 7-2 win Thursday night at Bellmont, which is rated No. 10 in 3A.
Carroll improved to 14-2 with the victory. Bellmont lost for the third straight time and slipped to 9-5, and 1-2 in the NHC.
MONROE—Adams Central dropped its second game in as many nights in girls varsity softball to Heritage with this game counting toward the ACAC standings and the visitors came away with a 6-5 decision.
Heritage scored in the top of the seventh on a single to break a 5-5 tie and then Knefelkamp shut down the Jets in the bottom of the seventh for the win.
"We made too many mistakes again tonight. We have to tighten it up a bit," analyzed AC coach Cary Blake.
Prayers spanning the gamut of human endeavor, good and bad, were offered at a 35-minute program at the Peace Monument in downtown Decatur during Thursday's annual National Day of Prayer. Nearly 200 people attended.
The noon event on the Adams County Courthouse square featured 11 speakers: from short welcoming remarks by Mayor John Schultz and Dr. Robert Brink, pastor of Decatur Church of God, to longer comments from nine others in the local faith community.
What originally started as a single-person department by former Washington Township trustee Bob Gay in Adams County over 35 years ago — with registered nurse Vickie Gagle in charge — will soon be assumed by a new agency.
Lucy J. Smith, 81, of Portland, died Thursday in Jay County Hospital at Portland.
She was born to Harley and Ioma Gegenheimer Miller
Among survivors are her husband, Bud; a son, Tom Overla of Portland; and a daughter, Mrs. Greg (Wanda) Shaneyfelt of Geneva.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Williamson and Spencer Funeral Home, Portland, with burial at a later date in Gravel Hill Cemetery, rural Bryant. Visiting hours are 9-11 a.m. Saturday.

He comes highly recommended from Purdue coach Matt Painter and from Tennessee coach Cuonzo Martin, and former Bellmont standout varsity coach Shaun Busick chimed in with his support. He's John Baker, who will likely be one of the youngest head boys basketball coaches in the state of Indiana next year when he jumps from his jayvee post of one year to top spot in the program at Bellmont High.
"How 'bout dem Patriots," said Heritage coach Dean Lehrman after his charges clipped Bellmont 5-3 Tuesday, to improve to 10-5 overall.
"It has been many a year since Heritage has beaten the Bellmont Braves on a baseball field," pointed out the veteran coach.
May has arrived and that means the city's Operation Cleanup soon will be under way, Bill Karbach, a member of the city's Board of Works and Safety, said at Tuesday night's city council meeting.
