A Decatur man, Andy L. Ivins, 28, received a 15-year prison sentence on Friday in Adams Circuit Court after pleading guilty in April to two counts of dealing in cocaine.
Ivins, who served prison time after a 2006 conviction here for possession of cocaine, was given two concurrent 15-year terms by Judge Frederick A. Schurger and was ordered to pay $728 in court costs and to repay local police $458 for the money used to buy cocaine from him.
Decatur firefighters Jeff Sheets and Tim Ulman received Medals of Valor at a special ceremony last week in recognition of their lifesaving actions last March 2 two miles inside Ohio when they rescued a Hoagland woman whose car was in deep and frigid floodwater.
Margaret L. Spindler, 81, was pulled from her car while the water was up to the window level and as she was entering hypothermia. Spindler suffered cardiac arrest and spent three weeks in hospitals, but recovered fully and was at last week's event.
OSSIAN—If Bellmont softball player Brieann Burkhalter was a cat, it would be safe to assume she used up many of her nine lives Saturday afternoon as the Bellmont Squaws rallied to capture the IHSAA sectional 22 in class 3A play at Norwell High School over the Peru Tigers by a 7-3 score in 10 innings.
The victory for the defending Norwell sectional champions means the Squaws will host Western High School in the IHSAA regional tonight at the BHS diamond.
FORT WAYNE—"We're the defending champs of this sectional until someone knocks us off," related Adams Central baseball coach Dave Neuenschwander and that statement proved true as the Jets pounded out a 5-1 win over Woodlan in the championship encounter of the IHSAA class 2A sectional final at Indiana Tech Monday evening.
Jonathan D. Brodbeck, 54, of Fort Wayne, passed away on Thursday, May 26, 2011, at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne.
Born in Decatur, Jonathan graduated from Adams Central High School and worked as a warehouse manager with R.E. Crosby & Sons Inc. for 29 years.
He was a member of the South Central congregation of Jehovah's Witness and was a Komet hockey fan. Jonathan also enjoyed fishing, camping, and turkey hunting and was an avid card player and collector.
Dana E. James, 61, of Decatur, passed away on Sunday, May 29, 2011, at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne.
He was born on October 10, 1949, in Grant County, Indiana, to Lewis F. and Phyllis Ann (Heideman) James.
He married Tami L. Brodbeck on June 24, 1978.
Anita M. Sprunger, 78, of Berne, died Monday at Swiss Village Retirement Community.
She was born in Adams County on April 12, 1933, to Alvin and Linda Lehman Kennel.
Among survivors are one son, Scott Sprunger of Berne, and two daughters, Mrs. Joe (Jilaine) Graber of Geneva and Mrs. Floyd (Renee) Liechty of Berne.
Robert M. Teeple, 91, of Decatur, died at 12:40 p.m. Friday at Woodcrest Retirement Community.
He was born on January 15, 1920.
He married Betty D. Zinsmaster on April 9, 1976; she passed away on January 17, 2003.
Walter E. Wheeler, 97, formerly of Monroe, died Saturday in Swiss Village Retirement Community at Berne.
He was born to Charles and Nora Wheeler.
Among survivors are a former wife, Edith I. Wheeler of Pleasant Mills; one son, Jim Wheeler of Terre Haute; two daughters, Judith King of Bluffton and Bonnie Cart of Monroe; one stepdaughter, Carol Hornaday of Mesa, Arizona; and two stepsons, Roger Call of Monroe and Robert Call of Summerville, South Carolina.

Adams County was almost floating today after a series of thunderstorms drove through the region as one of the wettest springs in local history continues.
The worst-off appear to be the area's farmers, who have been unable to plant crops due to the continual muddy conditions in fields.
Decatur and Adams County emerged mostly unscathed but drenched from the seemingly endless storms which rolled through the area during a period of 10 top 12 hours on Wednesday afternoon and early this morning.
