Berne pay hikes seen; Provost still ‘no’ on council

    Pay hikes for full-time employees of the city of Berne seem assured for 2013; likewise with proposed salary increases for the mayor and clerk-treasurer. Minor pay hikes for members of city council? Well, that's a different story.
    For the second time in two weeks, City Council member Phil Provost on Monday evening voted against a $250 annual pay raise recommended by Mayor Bill McKean.

    Despite the Internet, cell phones, e-mail and modern communications, every year entire regions find themselves in the dark, said Derek Augsburger, emergency coordinator for the Adams County ARES (Amateur Radio Emergency Service) team.
    "Tornadoes, fires, storms, ice and even the occasional cutting of fiber optic cables leave people without the means to communicate," Augsburger said.

    Vernon W. Luginbill, 80, of Decatur, passed away Thursday, June 28, 2012, at Adams Memorial Hospital.
    He was born on October 30, 1931, in Mercer County, Ohio, to the late Roy and Goldie (Bollenbacher) Luginbill.
    On December 12, 1954, he married Martha Jane Bollenbacher; she preceded him in death on September 12, 2004.

Three senior Braves play in All-Star game

IN ALL-STAR GAME — Brian Hakes, Gunnar Cale and Landon Baker, members of the Bellmont Sectional and Regional championship baseball team, competed on Sunday in the 3A Indiana Elite North vs. South All-Star Game played at Decatur Central High School in southwestern Indianapolis. Hakes played third base, Cale left field and Baker shortstop for the North squad and one of its coaches was Ben Fawbush, the head Bellmont coach. The game ended in a 10-10 tie, called due to a time limit. Games also were held in 1A, 2A and 4A senior divisions.

Clinton D. Steury

    Clinton D. Steury, 88, of Fort Wayne, died Thursday.
    He is survived by his wife, Ruth J. Steury of Fort Wayne; son, Wesley (Cindy) Steury of Fort Wayne; daughters, Ann (Allen) Tomlinson of Merrimack, N.H., and Rhonda (Barry) Culbertson of Fort Wayne.
    Visitation is 3-7 p.m. on Saturday at Yager-Kirchhofer Funeral Home, Berne, and from 4-7 p.m. Sunday, at First Missionary Church, 701 W. Rudisill Blvd, Fort Wayne.

Larry L. Thieme

    Larry L. Thieme, 49, of Decatur, was found deceased in his semi-truck in Kilgore, Texas, apparently from natural causes, on Wednesday, June 27, 2012. His death was unexpected.
    He was born on Wednesday, September 19, 1962, in Decatur, to the late Raymond and Esther (Werling) Thieme.
    Larry was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Decatur.

Ruby E. Windmiller

    Ruby E. Windmiller, 88, of Decatur, passed away at her residence on Thursday, June 27, 2012.
    Ruby was born in Jay County on October 14, 1923, to the late Virgil V. and Mary Ellen (Orr) Ford.
    She married Donald W. Windmiller in January of 1945; he preceded her in death in May, 1992.

Lifers take MYL title

    MONROE—The Farm Bureau Lifers came out of the loser's bracket of the double elimination Monroe Little League tournament to claim the 2012 title by handing Monroe Grain a pair of losses Thursday night.
    Had Monroe Grain, who beat the Lifers earlier in the week, won the opening contest Thursday, the tournament would have been over, but Farm Bureau pounded out a 14-2 win to force a second game. In the nightcap, the Lifers jumped out to a 8-2 lead and then held on for a final 14-10 triumph.

    Ray O. Brown, 77, of Berne, died at his residence on Friday, June 22, 2012.
    He was born on August 22, 1934, in Kalamazoo, Michigan, to the late Orlan W. and Laure (Sovine) Brown.
    Ray served in the United States Navy for 20 years. He was a member of the American Legion Post 468 in Berne, and VFW Post 6236 in Decatur.
