Georgianna C. Converset-Bowers

December 14, 2012

    Georgianna C. (Engle) Converset-Bowers, 95 of Fort Wayne, formerly of Decatur, passed away at 7:10 a.m. on Tuesday, December 11, 2012, at the Coventry Meadow.
    She married Julian W. Converset on December 2, 1942; he passed away on September 7, 1962. She then married Edward J. Bowers on February 10, 1979, in Fort Wayne; he passed away on May 17, 2000.

Anna Belle Gase

    Anna Belle Gase, 91, of Decatur, died Friday.

Robert E. Gavin

    Robert E. Gavin, 76, of Decatur, passed away Thursday, December 13, 2012, at 2:43 a.m. in the Lutheran Hospital.
    He married Barbara J. (Burdg) Gavin on February 6, 1982 in Decatur; she survives in Decatur.
    Bob served his country in the United States Army and was a member of the American Legion Post 43, Moose 1311, and VFW all in Decatur. He had worked for Yost Prestress, Automatic Sprinkler Corporation, and drove truck for ATL, until retiring in 2008.

Baker and Melcher are champs again

        Winning championships is getting to be a habit for Billy Baker.
        Baker played a major role Thursday night as Marian University staged two late rallies to force overtime, then won the NAIA national football championship on a field goal in overtime at Rome, Georgia.
    Another Bellmont product, Grant Melcher, contributed as a blocking fullback in Marian's 30-27 victory in an overtime thriller televised nationally by CBS Sports.

Berne eyeing ADA compliance

    Berne City Council on Monday approved a state-mandated plan that will bring the city into compliance with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
    This summer city workforce manager Kurt Dailey said a committee had been meeting monthly to identify intersections and other areas of town where curb cuts, sidewalks and other improvements are needed to assist handicapped individuals.
    The completed report must be submitted to the Indiana Department of Transportation by Dec. 31.

Info sought on Walmart thefts

    Adams County Crime Stoppers is seeking the help of the public in securing leads that will help police solve a theft that occurred at the Decatur Walmart on November 27.
    Police said that at 8:47 p.m. on November 27, a Penske moving van entered the Walmart parking lot and drove up to a secured fence area by the Tire and Lube Express entrance. Two people got out of the truck and one of them cut the lock off the fence door.

Braves lose to Carroll for first time in school history

    FORT WAYNE —  In its 25th and most likely final NHC wrestling contest with perennial state power Bellmont, Carroll did something Thursday night that it has never done before: win.
    Taking charge of the 2012-13 NHC wrestling dual-meet competition, the favored Chargers scored five falls in the first eight matches, then added another pin later in a convincing 49-24 win over the Braves.
    "They took it to us," said BHS assistant coach Paul Gunsett.

Harold E. Gray III

December 13, 2012

    Harold E. Gray III, 60, of Decatur, died at his residence on Wednesday, December 12, 2012.
    He was born in Teaneck, N.J., on September 16, 1952, to Harold E. and Estelle (Torterella) Gray II.
    On January 17, 1981 he married Jane Reinhart; she survives in Decatur.
    Harold retired from Sprint with 31 years of service and had been working presently as a manager at Moble King.

Gladys M. Kukelhan

    Gladys M. Kukelhan, 85, of Decatur, passed away on Tuesday, December 11, 2012, at Woodcrest Nursing Center.
    She was born in Allen County on Thursday, September 1, 1927, to the late Herman E. and Hortense (Flaharty) Fiedler.
    She married Albert Kukelhan on April 12, 1947; he passed away on February 9, 2001.
