Major AWM project now near finish

    The city's sign replacement project is officially complete, the major project in Anthony Wayne Meadows is nearly complete, and a long, distinguished career with the city street department also is complete.
    That was just some of the information given city council at its Tuesday night by Street/Sanitation Superintendent Jeremy Gilbert.

IHSAA announces football pairings

    INDIANAPOLIS—The 40th annual state football tournament hosted by the Indianapolis Colts held its sectional pairings show over the weekend featuring the placement of all 315 football teams (63 in each class).
    Five teams earned a bye, one from each class, with Adams Central and Bellmont preparing to defend their titles from last season and South Adams aiming to make noise in their own 1A sectional in the last season under coach Jason Arnold.

Cross Creek wins County Cup

    On a cold and windy day at Cross Creek Golf Club, it was the home team Cross Creek who defended its Adams County Cup title, scoring a 20-10 victory against the group from Limberlost.

Braves pummel Barons, 34-6

     WATERLOO—As the nursery rhyme goes, "Down came the rain and washed the Barons out" on Friday night as the Braves came into town and dominated DeKalb with the rushing game in a downpour, 34-6.

     It was hard to tell what ruined the Barons' senior night more, the rain or Bellmont's run game as the Braves accumulated 428 yards on the ground in a committee effort that resulted in three players over the century mark.

Mildred H. Reber
    Mildred H. Reber, 86 of Decatur, went home to be with her Lord on Friday, October 5, 2012.
    She was born in Adams County on June 22, 1926, to the late Robert and Fannie (Pence) Wemhoff.
    Mildred was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church and the Women of St. Marys. She was a formerly employee of the Adams County Park & Recreation Department.

Thomas L. Schell

     Thomas L. Schell, 66, of Decatur, died at Adams Memorial Hospital on Thursday, October 4, 2012.
    Tom was born in Decatur on July 8, 1946, to the late James Schell and Harriet (Moser) Schell Williamson.
    On August 27, 1966 he married Barbara K. Reed.
    Tom was a member of St Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus Council 864. He retired from McIntosh in Berne with 25 years of service, and from the City of Decatur with 20 years of service.

USF group seeks Haitian orphanage

    Our Lady of Perpetual Help Orphanage in northern Haiti is too crowded to serve more Haitian orphans, and University of Saint Francis (USF) students hope to raise $50,000 this fall so a new facility can be built by February, 2013.
    USF students connected with Father Andre Sylvestre, founder of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, two years ago. The USF students had been supplying funds and supplies to a variety of sources in Haiti ever since biology major Cortney Shepard returned from a mission trip and founded Formula for Life in 2007.

Harlow Ray Fletcher

    Harlow Ray Fletcher, 73, of Berne, peacefully passed away Thursday, October 4, 2012, at his home while surrounded by his family.
    He was born on September 12, 1939, in New London, Wis., to Ray and Eilene Fox Fletcher.
    Harlow married Carolyn Shoemaker on June 3, 1963.

SA elementary principal quits

    South Adams Elementary Principal Brian Strauss submitted his resignation, effective immediately, on Wednesday.
    "Mr. Strauss informed me that he is under investigation in relation to his previous employment in another county," Superintendent Scott Litwiller said in a statement. "The investigation does not involve his work for or presence in South Adams Schools."
    South Adams policy allows the superintendent to accept the resignation on behalf of the school board.    

Kathleen M. Henkel

    Kathleen M. Henkel, 81, of Berne, passed away October 3, 2012, at Swiss Village.
    She was born to the late Ralph and Marie (Niswander) Gerig on May 2, 1931.
    Kathleen married Walter "Wally" Henkel on August 16, 1952.
    She graduated from Auburn High School and from St. Francis College in 1971. She attended Fort Wayne Bible College and Oberlin College, and taught elementary music in the Fort Wayne Community Schools.
