    Grayson Hogg, a junior at South Adams High School, presented to school board members on Tuesday an idea he had for a school project.

Squaws take 2nd in cross country sectional

    One long streak for Bellmont cross country lived on and another was halted in the IHSAA cross country sectional held at the BHS course.
    The Squaws found themselves squeezed out of first place by Norwell (58-73) but will still advance to the IHSAA regional this Saturday at Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion along with Canterbury 103, Fort Wayne South Side 109, and Bishop Luers 119.
    The advancement will be the 19th consecutive regional appearance for Bellmont at the girls level.

Sandusky gets at least 30 years

    BELLEFONTE, Pa. (AP) — Jerry Sandusky was sentenced Tuesday to at least 30 years in prison — effectively a life sentence — in the child sexual abuse scandal that brought shame to Penn State and led to coach Joe Paterno’s downfall.
    A defiant Sandusky gave a rambling statement in which he denied the allegations and talked about his life in prison and the pain of being away from his family.

    Trae Scott Findley, 27, of Decatur died at his residence on Sunday, October 7, 2012.
    He was born in Lakeview, Mich., on November 25, 1984. to the late Richard G. Garcia Sr. and Sherry R. Kamps.
    Trae formerly worked for Dean’s.

Ruth Freed

    Ruth Freed, 84, of Decatur, died at her residence on Monday, October 8, 2012.
    She was born in Youngstown, Ohio, to Naomi and Hugh Easton on March 15, 1928.
    Ruth married Russell E. Freed on June 11, 1954, at Pleasant Grove United Presbyterian Church in Youngstown. Russell preceded her in death on November 5, 1971.

Marguerite L. Von Gunten

    On Sunday, October 7, 2012 , Marguerite L. "Kitty" Von Gunten, 92, of Berne, went to be with her heavenly father on her 92nd birthday.
    She was born to the late Frank and Joanna (Suman) Kitson on October 7, 1920.
    Kitty married Paul Von Gunten on September 12, 1941; he survives.
    She was a member of the First Mennonite Church where she taught Sunday school, was a member of Women in Mission, and was on the charter committee that started children's church.

Porter to lead parade

    Decatur industrialist Vic Porter has been named grand marshall of this year's Callithumpian Parade, according to an announcement by the Callithumpian Committee.
    The parade will be held on Monday, October 29.

Love, INC plans childrens’ gift drive

Love in the name of Christ (Love, INC) has announced that it is able to remain open after some financial concerns and has begun the Emmanuel Project 2012, which helps children of low-income families to receive Christmas gifts, according to a news release.
    Applications are now available to families in Adams County who are on the free- or reduced-price lunch program at schools. An application must be submitted for each child and delivered to the Love INC office, 1735 Patterson Street, no later than November 12.

New no-smoking law is detailed

    Beth Ralston of the Adams County Boys and Girls Club spoke Monday at a Decatur Chamber of Commerce luncheon regarding the new smoke-free air law that took effect July 1, 2012.
    The new law states that smoking is prohibited in most places of employment and public places, and within eight feet of a public entrance to these facilities, according to the Indiana State Department of Health.

Squaws draw Norwell for vball sectionals

    The volleyball sectionals are set for 2012 as Bellmont seeks to defend their title, while AC and South Adams co-exist in the same 2A bracket for county bragging rights and beyond.
    Bellmont drew the toughest team in the sectional in the Norwell Knights, but a three-set sweep in their NHC meeting earlier in September saw the Squaws getting the best of their adjacent county foes 25-21, 25-18, 27-25.
