Hiring relatives will be forbidden by law in Decatur — and most of Indiana — by July 1.
Decatur City Council on Tuesday night began the process of adopting an ordinance curbing nepotism and thus complying with a new law approved earlier this by the Indiana Legislature.
The law does have a "grandfather" clause, meaning any current situations which might violate the law do not have to be rectified.

Never before in the history of Adams Central High School has a Jet softball team ever won an IHSAA sectional tournament, let alone a regional tournament, and heaven forbid, even think about a semi-state championship.
This year, however, a group of Adams Central ball players have banded together to play a game they love. That dedication of the game puts them in the IHSAA state finals this Saturday against the South Putnam Eagles, a team that arguably is a strong favorite to win the crown.
There are four teams left in the 3A state finals for baseball in Indiana and the Bellmont Braves are one of them for the first time since 2002 when Jon Stevens' group of Braves fell to Vincennes Lincoln, 4-0 in the state final.
Despite the visit to Victory Field in Indianapolis back in 2002, the Braves are still without a semi-state title due to the fact that there was not a semi-state conducted from 2000-03.
Decatur Assistant Fire Chief Jim Hitchcock says that by the first part of next week, the city fire department will have smoke detectors for use by county residents.
Anyone who needs a smoke detector may visit the fire station on Seventh St., just off Adams St., or call the department, 724-8909.
Hitchcock noted, however, that the detectors will not be given to anyone. "Instead, we will take them to the home and install them to be sure they are installed properly," he said.
