Relay Day a success despite heat

June 24, 2013

    The Adams Central football field was a busy place Saturday and into Sunday as the 2013 Relay for Life was held.
    Co-honoraries Tyson Bahrke and Lisa Case lead the Survivors' Walk, which opened the event at noon on Saturday.
    Hundreds of people turned out for the annual event held in upper-80-degree weather.

Headaches first sign for Case

    Like Tyson Bahrke, the other Honorarie for this year's Adams County Relay for Life held last weekend, Lisa Case's battle with cancer began less than a year ago.
    At the end of August, Lisa began to complain of dizziness and headaches, which doctors thought were brought on by a urinary infection. However, a couple of weeks after her symptoms began, Lisa experienced an extreme bout of dizziness that landed her in the emergency room at Adams Memorial.

Jobless rate is on hold at 6.8%

    Friday's report from the Indiana Department of Workforce Development showed that unemployment was unchanged in Adams County during May.
    The report listed the county with a 6.8 percent jobless rate for the month, identical to the  previous month. April's 6.8 percent rate was Adams County's lowest since October of 2012 and was a substantial drop from the county's 8.1 percent rate in March of this year.
    One year ago, in May of 2012, the county's unemployment rate was 7.3 percent.

Matilda Leatherman

    Matilda "Til" Meyer Leatherman, 95, Berne, died Tuesday at Swiss Village, Berne.
    Among survivors is a sister, Maxine Nussbaum of Berne.
    Visitation will be from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, June 22, at Swiss Village. Funeral services will be there at 2 p.m. Saturday, Burial will follow in MRE Cemetery in Berne.
    Arrangements are by Yager-Kirchhofer Funeral Home.

More than a knee injury

    Tyson Bahrke and Lisa Case, who are both battling cancer, will be honored at this year's Relay for Life by leading the Survivor's Walk which begins at noon on Saturday and opens the 2013 Adams County Relay for Life at Adams Central's football field.

Warm and dry day for the Relay

    It may be a bit on the warm side, but nary a drop of rain is in the National Weather Service forecast for this weekend, which is good news for Relayers – all the participants in the annual Adams County Relay for Life.
    The cancer-fighter kicks off at noon at the Adams Central football field in Monroe and carries on until 10 a.m. Sunday.
    Temperatures are expected in the upper 80s to around 90 under mostly sunny skies both days, with a Saturday night low around 70, the weather bureau said.

Hoagland Days has squirmy start

    Hoagland Days got off to a greasy start on Thursday, with young people chasing greased pigs.
    The annual event swings into high gear today.
    The food tent will be open from 5 to 11 p.m. today and noon to 11 p.m. Saturday. The adult beverage tent is open from 6:30 to midnight today and 2 p.m. to midnight on Saturday. Amusement rides will operate from 6 to 11 today and noon to 5 on Saturday.

Roger D. Lehrman

    Roger Dan Lehrman, 65, of Argyle, Minn., died June 13, 2013 at his home.
    The son of the late Dan and Lola Lehrman of Monroeville, Ind., he moved to Minnesota in 1970.
    Among survivors are his stepmother, Phyllis J. Lehrman of Decatur; two brothers, Ron (Marcia) Lehrman of Brownsburg, Ind., and Tom (Barb) Lehrman of Decatur; sister, Mary Ann (Randy) Steiner of Fort Wayne; two nieces; three nephews; and many friends and customers of Roger's Greenhouse in Warren, Minn.

Progress: City is moving forward on ex-bank building, bare wall

    City officials are moving forward on revamping the recently purchased former bank building downtown and putting a new face on the bare wall across the street, a wall left open when the former sweeper shop/Holthouse Drug Co. building was demolished.
    MartinRiley, an engineering and architectural firm in Fort Wayne, has been hired for both projects, it was learned at Tuesday night's Decatur City Council meeting.

Vets’ brick sales begin

    Adams County maintenance department director Dave Meyer came to the commissioners on behalf of the Adams County Peace Monument Committee this week to report that bricks to commemorate military veterans are now on sale.
    These bricks will be part of the memorial wall that is to be erected around the monument.
