Young Starfires hold off Railroaders, 42-31

    BERNE — South Adams freshman Gabe Schwartz responded to the pressure of his first varsity wrestling match, delivering the sudden fall at 170 pounds that sealed a 42-31 Starfires' victory over Garrett Thursday night in the season opener at the Stardome.
    "Schwartz comes up with a huge win as a freshmen and wins a meet for us. He was thrown right in it and got it done," praised South Adams coach Eric Myers after the ACAC meet.

Theodore Wayne Perry

    Theodore “Ted” Wayne Perry, 86, of Fort Wayne, died Monday, November 19, 2012, at home.
    Born in Kalamazoo, Mich., he was the son of the late Harrison and Marie (VanAvery) Perry.
    The World War II Navy veteran was a member of the V.F.W. 10006 and the Eagles in New Haven. He retired from ITT after 48 years of service.

Vera L. Rauch

    Vera L. Rauch, 87, of Decatur, passed away at 8:40 p.m. on Wednesday, November 28, 2012, at Adams Memorial Hospital.
    She was born in Adams County on June 25, 1925, to the late Julius C. and Anna I. (Bernard) Schultz.
    On June 21, 1950, she married Homer F. Rauch; he died on August 30, 1999.

City ‘stepped up to plate’ for Chinese -- Macklin, Schultz not sure of what’s next; vow to continue effort

    "We had a nice package prepared and they appreciated it. I think we went a long way toward solidifying a good relationship," Adams County Economic Development Director Larry Macklin said Wednesday.
    A six-member delegation from the Chinese community of Jiaojiang departed Decatur between 12:30 and 1 p.m. Tuesday, returning to Indianapolis for the flight home. They arrived here late Sunday night and began a whirlwind tour of the community on Monday morning.

    A large number of students are involved in the upcoming Bellmont High School production of the award-winning musical "Aida" this weekend in the Erekson Theatre.
    Senior Madison Stoppenhagen portrays Aida, described as a strong, proud and intelligent woman who is a true leader to the Nubian people, even when she is reluctant to show it.

Former Wells EMS director sentenced

    A 49-year-old Craigville woman on Monday was sentenced to nine years in prison on charges related to her theft of painkillers while serving as the former director of the Wells County Emergency Medical Service. She is expected to serve only one year behind bars, however.

Jets and Stars set to take mat tonight

    Ten experienced wrestlers dot the lineup as Class A No. 1 Adams Central opens its season at home Thursday with ACAC foe Leo.
    The Jets of coach Doug Schultz will have only one freshman in the lineup, 106-pounder Tucker Miller, while five seniors give the Jets a veteran look.
    Former state streeter Cody Walburn (90-11) will start his final season at 126 for the Jets, while Ben Pfister, state rated at 182 pounds, will open at 195 pounds for his second and last campaign for Central.

Lehman Park to get a fresh look next year -- Amanda Paterson raises $10,700 for equipment

    Berne's Lehman Park will take on a fresh look next spring with the addition of new, modern playground equipment to replace outdated equipment that has been in place for decades and in some cases has been deemed unsafe.
    Profits from three annual Fall Harvest festivals, coupled with private donations, left the Berne Park Board with $19,500 in its park equipment fund earlier this month, board president and city councilman Ron Dull told city council members Monday evening.

Friday is deadline to file for SA board vacancies

    Friday is the deadline to apply for either of two vacancies on the seven-member South Adams School Board.    
    Interested applicants should mail a cover letter and resume to Arlene Amstutz, Board President, 1075 Starfire Way, Berne, IN, 46711. Candidates must live within the city limits of Berne at least one year before November 6 and be at  least 21 years of age.
