First snowfall of new year greets countians

January 6, 2015

    Adams County residents awoke this morning to 3 inches of fresh snow on the ground, causing headaches headaches for drivers making a slow commute on slick roadways.
    All three Adams County public school systems were operating on a 2-hour delay at press time, as were neighboring Jay County Schools in Indiana, and Van Wert City Schools and Parkway Local Schools in Ohio.

Hazel L. Omlor

    Hazel L. Omlor was stillborn Jan. 1, 2015 at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne.
    Among survivors are her parents Charles P. and Sarah A. Omlor of Decatur; a brother, Charles S. Omlor at home; paternal grandmother, Paula L. Omlor of Decatur; maternal grandparents Charles D. and Mary L Jauregui of Decatur; paternal great grandparents Paul D. and Marilyn L. Kahn of Kingsland; maternal great prandparents Sal and Lu Jauregui of Decatur.
    She was preceded in death by her paternal grandfather Stephen C. Omlor.

Jerry J. Parr

    Jerry J. Parr, 82, Berne, passed away on Jan. 3, 2015. He was born in Marion Sept. 8, 1932, to the late J. louis and Eugenia Hunnicutt. He married Pauline Gerber on March 15, 1959, she survives.

Allen W. Ross

January 5, 2015

    Allen W. Ross, 58, Decatur, passed away at 10:40 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, 2015 at the Adams Memorial Hospital located in Decatur.
    Allen was born in Decatur Saturday, Sept. 1, 1956, the son of Leo Ross and Joyce (Young) Ross; they survive.

Robert J. Gase

    Robert J. Gase, 71, Decatur, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2014, at his residence. He was born in Adams County Nov. 14, 1943, to the late Anthony and J. Edna (Miller) Gase. He was married to Mary C. Gielerak; she survives.
    Bob was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church. He was an avid golfer and I.U. Basketball Fan.
    He worked in heating installation for Mark’s Plumbing and Heating and prior to that was employed at the Decatur G.E. plant for 23 years.

Joan Workinger-Johnson

January 5, 2015

    Joan Workinger-Johnson, 81, Decatur, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2014, at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne. She was born Dec. 24, 1933, to the late Reed and Esther (Mauller) Riley. She was a 1951 graduate of Pleasant Mills High School and married her high school sweetheart, Bill Workinger, Dec. 30, 1951; he passed away Feb. 22, 1988.

Winter rears its ugly head at last

    After a decidedly mild December, it looks as though the wait for the first major winter weather system to hit Adams County is about to come to an end. Single-digit temperatures greeted local residents this morning, with a forecast that calls for snow later in the day.
    The National Weather Service in northern Indiana has issued a winter weather advisory beginning at 10 p.m. today through 10 a.m. Tuesday. Area residents can expect to see snow accumulations of 3 to 5 inches during the overnight hours and into Tuesday morning.

    Gas prices in Decatur continue to be among the highest in the region, but motorists making a short drive to the east will find prices much more to their liking. The photo above shows unleaded gas was selling for $1.58 per gallon Sunday night.
