Large crowd gathers to pay respects to veterans

    Approximately 200 people gathered at the Adams County Courthouse Square Monday to honor those killed in service to our country as part of the annual Memorial Day celebration.
    The day began at 8:30 a.m. with services at St. Joseph and Decatur cemeteries. Shortly after 10 a.m., the celebration moved to the Jackson Street bridge, where former judge and military veteran Frederick A Schurger tossed a wreath into the St. Marys River in honor of United States Navy veterans.

Area residents congregate for annual Memorial Day celebration

    Area residents and veterans, including Decatur Mayor John Schultz, Berne Mayor Bill McKean and County Commissioner Doug Bauman, took part in the annual Memorial Day celebration held Monday on the courthouse lawn. Hundreds of people were in attendance as the community honored those who died in defense of their country.

War’s memories remain poignantly painful for Decatur WWII vet

    In the summer of 1942, Adams County saw a contingent of 56 men depart the local area for physical exams in anticipation of being sent to various U.S. Army training facilities and eventually ending up participating in the European corridor battles during World War II.

   The Braves draw near to sectional play next week as they entertain two tough squads in Concordia Lutheran and the #1 ranked team in 4A Munster. Bellmont takes on Concordia in the opening game slated for 10 a.m. Saturday morning. After Munster/Concordia play game two at approximately 1 p.m., the Braves suit up again against Munster around 4 p.m.

     Hannah Garner, 21, Decatur, and a student at Ball State University, is pictured painting the curb along 1st Street, south of Madison Street, in Decatur Thursday morning. Pictured in the background are Sam(antha) Grote, 22, Decatur and a student at Purdue, and Sarah Garner, 18, Decatur, sister to Hannah and a student at Ball State. All three have been hired by the city of Decatur as full time workers through the summer.

 

Red Gold is approved for ‘super’ abatement

    Red Gold was approved for a phase-in tax applications for a 10-year super tax abatement by the town of Geneva, following a special meeting of the town council Tuesday evening to score the application submitted by the company.
    The firm submitted two applications for the abatement — one for real property and the other for personal property. According to Clerk/Treasurer Bill Warren, Red Gold plans a “green” structure with energy-saving attributes.    

Business is blooming

     After a cold and dreary start to the season last week, this Thursday provided a much better weather day for the Decatur Farmer’s Market. Larry and Sue Elliott, along with Anita Spiegal at right, took a moment to stop and smell (and perhaps buy) the flowers.
