Sentencing reforms will have major impact on Adams Co.

    The annual State of the Judiciary address was presented by Adams County Circuit Court Judge Chad Kukelhan and Superior Court Judge Patrick Miller to members of the Decatur Chamber of Commerce at Monday’s monthly noon chamber luncheon at Woodcrest retirement community.
    Miller, during his portion of the address, touched upon changes coming this summer in the way some criminal defendants are sentenced and where they serve their stints of incarceration.

Barge builder gets ‘super’ abatement in Berne

    With the final hearing held Monday night, Mid-America Foundation Co., doing business as Poseidon Barge, received a super tax abatement by a unanimous vote of Berne City Council.
    Under a scoring system put in place by the city to rank applications for the enhanced tax abatements now available in Berne, City attorney Dave Baumgartner reported MAFC received scores of 94 for real property and 96 for personal property, well above the required 70 points necessary to qualify for the abatement.

Leona L. Lengerich

    Leona L. Lengerich, 85, Decatur, died Friday, March 7, 2014, at Visiting Nurse and Hospice Home in Fort Wayne.
    Leona was born in Adams County, Sept. 9, 1928, to the late Alfred and Rose (Faurote) Rauch.
    She married Leonard J. Lengerich Oct. 18, 1952; he survives after 61 years of marriage.
    Leona was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church and the Rosary Society. She was a homemaker.

    Eugene R. "Hugo" Murchland, 90, Decatur, passed away Thursday, March 6, 2014, at his residence. 
    He was born Wednesday,  June 27, 1923, in Dixon, the son of the late William B. and Amelia M. A. (Zimmerman) Murchland.

    He was born Wednesday,  June 27, 1923, in Dixon, the son of the late William B. and Amelia M. A. (Zimmerman) Murchland.

James E. Myers

    James E. Myers, 89, Fort Wayne, formerly Decatur, died Thursday, March 6, 2014, at Woodview Assisted Living in Fort Wayne.
    James was born May 10, 1924, in Allen County, to the late Fredrick C. and Mary E. (Teeple) Myers.
    He married Selma O. (Strahm) Myers Jan. 16, 1954; she preceded him in death June 6, 2008.
    James was a member of Zion United Church of Christ in Decatur and was the co-owner of Myers Furniture.

Jack L. Chilcote

    Jack L. Chilcote 79, Decatur, passed away Saturday, March 8, 2014, at his residence.
    He was born April 22, 1934, to the late Roy and Ida Chilcote in Adams County.
    Jack married Sondra (May) Oct. 19, 1956; she survives.

Harold E. Cornett

    Harold E. Cornett, 60, Decatur, passed away Friday, March 7, 2014, at Lutheran Hospital.
    He was born Friday, Oct. 2, 1953, in Decatur, the son of the late Willie and Mae (McQueen) Cornett.
    Harold was employed by Strick Corporation in Monroe for 15 years.

County readies for sale of delinquent tax certificates

    Adams County Attorney Mark Burry informed the board of county commissioners recently that County Treasurer Tom Krueckeberg will hold a tax certificate sale on properties with delinquent and outstanding taxes beginning at 9 a.m. on April 25 in the commission/council chambers of the Service Complex.
    Burry said the county had conducted a tax sale last November on those same properties, and some of the properties sold at that time.
