Suit filed in federal court alleges local jail rape

     A lawsuit filed last week in U.S. District Court in Fort Wayne contains allegations of rape against a former Adams County jail staffer. The suit also accuses Sheriff Shane Rekeweg and an unnamed female jail staffer of negligence in allowing the alleged sexual assaults to take place.

Crash site ceremony honors former Indy 500 3-time winner

    A brief ceremony was held Thursday afternoon — 60 years, nearly to the minute, after an Indiana auto racing legend died in a cornfield near Peterson in Adams County — to pay tribute to the man credited with saving the Indianapolis Motor Speedway from extinction.
    Three checkered flags, some flowers and a makeshift podium were assembled along County Road 500N at 4:30 p.m. for the ceremony marking the remembrance of the lives of Wilbur Shaw and two other men who were killed in a plane crash at the site in 1954.

Four seek 2 seats on South Adams school board

    Four candidates are seeking two elected positions to the South Adams Schools’ board of education, representing District 3 on that board. Incumbents Landon Patterson and Ray Gill are being challenged by former board member Mitch Sprunger and former board candidate Naomi Muselman.
    Sprunger resides at 1005 Mill Pond Road, Berne. In 2009-2010 he served on the South Adams school board as an appointed member to fill out the term of a position vacated by a member who departed before their term had expired.

Squaws win all four sectional titles!

SQUAW POWER!!!—For the first time in school history, every fall girls sport at Bellmont was victorious in bringing home a sectional crown this season. What started as the first girls golf sectional title won outright turned into the soccer team earning their fifth crown, then the cross country team’s ninth sectional on the same day. With the Squaws’ vollleyball team capturing their 31st crown at Mississinewa (10th in a row), Bellmont completed the quad-fecta of successful female teams this fall. (Photo by Dylan Malone)

2 non-incumbents seek clerk’s office

    The race for control of the Adams County Clerk of Court’s office will be decided Nov. 4 as voters have two familiar names from which to choose. With incumbent Clerk Gayla Reinhart, a Republican, prevented by state term limits from seeking re-election, the race will pit former Adams County Assessor Judy Affolder, a Democrat, against Republican Jim Voglewede Jr.

Expansion means 20 new jobs at Red Gold

     An expansion project at Red Gold in Geneva will lead to the addition of more than 20 new jobs at that facility, according to a spokesman for the Elwood-based tomato processing firm.

    Jerry Dean Hardesty III entered eternal life at birth on Oct. 25, 2014, at Adams Memorial Hospital. Jerry was the son of Jerry Dean Hardesty Jr. and Kayln T. (Eyanson) Hardesty.
  Among survivors are maternal grandparents, Christiana L. and Donald R. White; paternal grandmother, RaeJean Hardesty; maternal great-grandmother, Cheryl A. Eyanson; maternal great-great-grandmother, Shirley A. Clark, all of Decatur; and numerous aunts and uncles.

    One of the greatest people we have ever known is now sitting next to Jesus in Heaven. Judy (Butler) Murray, 65, passed away Monday, Oct. 27, 2014, at the University of Michigan Medical Center. She battled cancer for many years, but instead it was a heart problem that took her from us.
