New charges filed in death of Bluffton boy

  BLUFFTON, Ind. (AP) — A northeastern Indiana couple charged in connection with the death of a 3-year-old boy whose burned body was found dumped in a wooded area are now facing drug charges.
    Wells County prosecutors filed one count each of dealing methamphetamine Tuesday against the boy’s 21-year-old mother, Breanna J. Arnold, and her boyfriend, 30-year-old Zachary Barnes.

LATEST UPDATE: School delays and closings

     LATEST UPDATE: All three public school systems, St. Joseph Catholic and Wyneken Lutheran Memorial schools are now closed for the day, as are Jay County Schools and  Northern Wells. Bluffton-Harrison and Southern Wells are operating on a 2 hour delay, as are Parkway Local Schools in neighboring Ohio.  We will update this information as needed.

Lady Stars use hot shooting to silence Lady Eagles, 56-35

    BERNE— Sydney Wills scored 24 points on a scorching 9-12 effort from the floor including six three-pointers to pace the South Adams Lady Starfires to a lopsided 56-35 victory over the Churubusco Eagles on Thursday night.
    The Stars produced a 19-4 advantage in the first quarter against the Eagles who came into the contest riding a four-game winning streak but the loss put them to 11-9 on the season.

Young heroine saluted by firefighters, then turns tables with award of her own

    An unusually warm day in November started off like any other for the family of Northwest fourth grader Hailey Smith. However, before the day was done, Hailey would become a heroine.
    After going through the “Survive Alive” program at Safety Village in Decatur, Hailey went home that afternoon and put her new-found knowledge to work. Hailey and her family developed an exit plan for their home in the event of a fire, then practiced the escape route and meeting at a safe place.

County’s drone gets test drive

    Adams County Data Processing Director Landon Patterson showed off the county’s unmanned aerial vehicle — or UAV — during a demonstration Thursday afternoon in the vacant field just north of Riverside Center in Decatur.
    Members of the media who had gathered for the event watched as Patterson programmed the software for the afternoon flight, then saw the UAV soar over the area around Riverside for several minutes.

County jobless rate still 5%

    Adams County’s unemployment rate remained at 5.0 percent for the second consecutive month during December, according to figures released Wednesday by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development.
    The rate for the final month of 2014 was .4 percent lower than one year earlier. Local jobless figures bottomed out during 2014 at 4.3 percent in September after hitting a yearly high of 6.0 percent in February. Jobless rates in the county peaked at 15.2 percent in July of 2010.

UPDATE: School closings and delays

      UPDATE: Parkway Local Schools in Ohio has cancelled classes for today. All three Adams County public school systems, St. Joseph Catholic School and Wyneken Lutheran Memorial are all operating on a 2 hour delay due to freezing rain creating icy road conditions. Crestview Local, Van Wert City Schools and Vantage Career Center in neighboring Ohio are also operating on a 2 hour delay. We will update this information as needed.
