The second round of the Class 2A sectional at the South Adams Stardome in Berne will be played on Friday, with four teams in action:
•At 6 p.m., Adams Central (13-7) will play Bishop Luers (16-4).
•After that game, Bluffton (14-6), which beat South Adams on Tuesday, will take on Woodlan (2-18).
Friday's winners will play for the sectional title at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.
The streak is over!
The Bellmont Braves dispatched a 14-game losing streak by the wayside Tuesday night in the opening round of the class 3A sectional 22 boys basketball tournament at the Teepee by outlasting Maconaquah, a team that entered the tourney with a 14-6 record, by a 59-57 count in overtime.
BERNE — Bluffton built a 10-point lead over South Adams going into the fourth quarter of their Sectional 38 opener Tuesday, then Tigers' coach Kevin Leising pulled the plug as his squad successfully kept the ball away from the SA defenders in an eventual 50-31 victory at the Stardome.
The win puts the 14-6 Tigers in the 7:30 p.m. semi-final game against 2-18 Woodlan Friday night. Adams Central, 13-7, will take on state 2A power Bishop Luers, 16-4, in the 6 p.m. semi-final.
Aaron McClure really likes basketball. He played it a lot as a youth, still plays a bit as an adult, and has been a coach for 10 years or more at his alma mater.
However, as much as Adams Central's head coach (and very good former Flying Jet) enjoys the game, he was stone-faced serious when he talked about AC's sectional matchup with powerful Bishop Luers, winner of two of the last three Indiana Class 2A championships.
"How could you even consider getting rid of this," stated Bellmont wrestling coach Brent Faurote, minutes after his club was beaten by Penn, with the fiasco of a first-round match between Mater Dei and Crown Point finishing up on the next mat.
GREENWOOD — Penn wrestlers Sarah Hildebrandt at 112 and Jacob Davis at 119 pounds scored key come-from-behind wins over Bellmont's Jacob Girod and Bobby Keuneke to shift the momentum, propelling the Kingsmen to a 35-20 win over the Braves the Wrestling Team State quarter-finals Saturday morning at Center Grove.
It's been a long time since the Bellmont Braves have exited the locker room after a game with a smile on their face but BHS cage coach Larry Patterson said he believes the Braves "match up well" with the Maconaquah Braves, a team Bellmont will face in the opening game of the class 3A sectional Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at the Bellmont gym.
Bellmont's three-time first team All-State outside hitter Alex Fuelling has received the ultimate honor in high school sports, selection to an All-American team.
PrepVolleyball.com placed Fuelling, who led Bellmont to the 2010 3A Indiana state crown, on their 2010 All-American list, which includes the 150 top prep volleyball players in the country.
"I'm very proud and very happy for her," stated Bellmont volleyball coach Craig Krull on hearing the news Friday night.
Bellmont's 400 freestyle relay team broke the school record in the Jay County Sectional last Saturday. That record had stood for 27 years. Ironically, that was the last time that Bellmont advanced a swimmer to the second day of state competition. Bellmont's four swimmers set for the 2011 Boys Swimming and Diving State Championships feel they have a chance to break that skein and earn some Bellmont points at Indy.
