Cross Creek camp hosts 67 players

June 21, 2011

    A total of 67 youngsters participated in the recent Cross Creek Golf Camp according to notes released today by camp director Mike Macke.
    Macke said the five-day camp ended with a tournament last Friday and there also was a skills competition last Thursday based on various skills such as putting, chipping, and full swing.
    The tournament was broken down into age groups and from different tees. The different ages also played a varying number of holes in their tournament.

Area youth tourneys coming up

    Monroe Grain is ready to make a run at Monroe LL leaders Peterson Grain and the Farm Bureau Lifers as the regular season winds down. The tourney will be in full force Thursday, though the seeds have not been decided.
    The tourney will open with two games Thursday and two other seeded teams will take on winners of the Thursday games on Friday night. The tourney will pick up Monday and run through June 29, a Thursday. It is a double-elimination tourney.

Lindahl winner Hankenson set for Chicago wrestling challenge

    Ryley Hankenson won 11 varsity letters at Bellmont, made two trips to the IHSAA State Individual Wrestling Finals , placing fifth in 2011, and won 128 matches in his Braves' career and started at defensive back for a state championship football team, yet Bellmont assistant wrestling coach Tim Myers calls him a "diamond in the rough" and that the University of Chicago is getting some kind of talent.

Bittner’s 2 homers pace DDS

    The Monroe Little League posted two games last Friday with lots of runs scored and four homers in one game:
    • Bank of Geneva beat Farm Bureau, 9-8.
    • Decatur Dental Services topped Peterson Grain, 10-9.
    In the BG-FB game, Bank of Geneva (5-9) had 10 hits, led by Joel Harvey's two triples, with his second one driving in the winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning. He also had a single. Teammates Corbin Becher, Hunter Lotter, and Drexel Canales each had two singles.

H.E.B.A. Mays Tourney set

    The Oetting Cubs will take on the Monroeville Pills Tuesday at Monroeville in the first game of the Hoosier East Baseball Alliance Mays Baseball Tournament.
    That winner will clash with league champion Kintz Insurance on Thursday at 6 p.m. at Monroeville. Box and Pallett of Monroeville will be in Decatur to take on Decatur Dental at 6 p.m. Thursday in the other upper bracket game.
    In the lower bracket, the Monmouth Fleming Rays will take on the Hull Lift Truck squad at 7:45 p.m. in Decatur.

ICGSA names Harvey All-State

    The Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association has named Alexis Harvey a second team All-State track competitor, it was noted today by Bellmont coach Carl Risch.
    Apparently, the association named 40 girls first team all-state and almost that many to the second team. Harvey, a sophomore, placed fourth in the 200 meter run at the IHSAA State Girls Track Meet recently, setting a BHS record with a 24.83.

Kintz clinches top Mays spot

    The Kintz Insurance Krushers broke open a tight 3-2 game in the Willie Mays League of the Hoosier East Baseball Alliance with five runs in the bottom of the third Thursday night and ended up capturing a 13-4 win over Hull Lift.
    With the victory, Kintz won the HEBA Mays league title and with its 10-2 slate will be the number one seed in the upcoming league tournament.

Former BHS grid coaches set for duty at S. Adams

    Apparently, former Bellmont football coaches Rick Burkhalter and Greg Meyer, co-head coaches two years ago with the sudden resignation of Toney Bergman, are not riding off into the sunset  after a big run at Bellmont.
    South Adams Athletic Director Mike Pries was happy to confirm Wednesday that both Burkhalter and Meyer will be assistant coaches for Jason Arnold and the South Adams Starfires this fall.

Hull slams DDS in Decatur showdown

    An 8-run fifth stopped this one as Hull Lift Trucks slammed DDS 13-1 in a battle of Decatur Mays clubs Tuesday. Colin Mills doubled with 2 of Hull's 7 hits in the victory.
    Logan Arriaga took the win as he came on in the third to a bases-loaded jam and threw one pitchy, getting David Noetzel to ground back to the mound to get out of the mess.  Arriaga fanned 5 with no walks and 2 hits allowed as he relieved Johnathan Wilder, who fanned 4, walked three and gave up no hits in 2-plus innings.

Hakes, Cale earn all-NHC honors

      Bellmont junior third baseman Brian Hakes and junior centerfielder Gunnar Cale gained honor-mention on the All-NHC baseball team.
    A 1-6 league record for Bellmont meant little conference recognition for the Braves.
