FORT WAYNE— IPFW amassed their first division I post-season win Wednesday night when they knocked off Akron in the opening round of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament.
The Mastodons closed out a 97-91 victory despite the Zips shooting a blistering 65% from the field in a game hosted by the IPFW Gates' Center, another playoff first for the Dons.
ANDERSON—The Bellmont Squaws appear to be poised to defend their 2013 small school state indoor track championship this coming Saturday at Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion following another stellar performance in a state qualifier held Saturday at Anderson University.
The Squaws qualified individuals in 10 of 11 events to be held after nearly two dozen qualifiers were held across the state in recent weeks and BHS coach Carl Risch, never one to go overboard in tooting his team's horn in advance, admitted
Selection Sunday revealed all 68 teams in the 2014 NCAA basketball tournament. Below is the link to a bracket online for fans to use for entry into the contest. There are 14 prizes to give away including gifts from Pizza King, Curves Gym, Anytime Fitness, Villa Lanes, Pizza Hut, Quik Stop Oil Lube, and Back 40 Junction given away to the top brackets.
With Selection Sunday upon us tomorrow evening, brackets will be available to fill out for the DDD March Madness challenge.
On Sunday night, a link will be posted under sports on the DDD website at www.decaturdailydemocrat.com featuring instructions for getting entries in for the competition.

A few days after the release of the NHC girls teams, the boys have been selected for the 2013-14 basketball season for All-Conference as Bellmont senior Cameron Bienz was honored on the second team.
After another brutal year in the NHC, Bellmont went 1-6 in the conference topping only East Noble (0-7) during the regular season. New Haven took the crown this season with a 7-0 mark, while Homestead went 6-1, Norwell 5-2, Carroll 4-3, Columbia City 3-4, and DeKalb 2-5.
FORT WAYNE—The Bellmont girls track team served notice Saturday they not only expect to repeat as the indoor state champions in the small school division but that they'll be in the hunt for the IHSAA state title in early June in Bloomington.
The ACAC girls basketball All-Conference teams were selected this week for the 2013-14 season boasting a Lady Jet and Starfire on the first team.
Senior Dzejna Ahmetovic was the lone first teamer for South Adams leading the Stars to one of their most successful seasons in school history with 13 victories this year. Ahmetovic is also among Hoosier Basketball Magazine's top 100 senior girls basketball players in Indiana.
KINGSLAND— The hosting Norwell Knights and Columbia City Eagles advanced with victories on Tuesday night in the opening round of sectional play.
After Norwell dominated the opener against Heritage, 79-43, the Eagles shot 18-32 (56%) from the field to efficiently end the Bellmont Braves' season in a 52-27 rout.
The Northeast Hoosier Conference released its list of All-Conference girls basketball teams this week with one Bellmont Squaws player making the list amongst 27 total recipients.
Courtney Scherer, the lone senior on a Bellmont team that struggled this season going winless, made honorable mention along with four other seniors, freshman Lanie Allen from East Noble, and sophomore Skylar Ostrowski from DeKalb.
The North Adams Baseball League has announced the registration for their inaugural season for the 2014 summer youth leagues.
Forming now are four boys leagues including major (11-12), AAA (9-10), AA (7-8), and A (T-ball 4-6).
