The drawing for the 104th annual IHSAA boys basketball state tournament was held on Sunday featuring all three Adams County schools learning their post-season fate.
The Bellmont Braves (5-13) will travel to the Norwell-hosted 3A sectional #23, while South Adams and Adams Central are on a collision course for the Stardome in Berne for class 2A's sectional #36.
Tonight the Braves look to end a four-game skid with a victory over visiting Bluffton. The Tigers and Braves will square off for the JV contest at 6:30 p.m. with the varsity and pre-game show starting immediately afterwards around 7:30 p.m. To view tonight's game, click the link below. "Out of the three kids, two got their best possible draws," stated Bellmont coach Brent Faurote after reviewing the IHSAA State Finals pairings.
Bellmont will send three to state Friday and Adams Central two, and four of the five have decent paths, and the fifth, BHS senior Logan Neher at 145, has been wrestling at such a high level that is definitely not a stretch for him to go out and beat the No. 4 rated Isaac Rentas of Merrillville.
MONROE— It was appropriate that on Senior Night that a senior would come up with the plays of the game to lead his team to victory.
Alex Byerly went from would-be goat to hero in the final seconds Tuesday night to give Adams Central a thrilling 53-52 non-conference win over Southwood as he not only stopped what appeared was going to be an easy Southwood lay-up but then knocked down the game-winning free throw with 5.2 seconds to play.
Tonight Bellmont hosts another Braves team in the form of Blackhawk Christian for a varsity basketball contest. BERNE— It’s been a long time coming for South Adams, but the girls basketball program has had some success recently. The high school team went a tidy 13-7 this season under second-year coach Brett Freeman and it seems that there is more help on the way in the underclassmen.
FORT WAYNE — Bellmont's Logan Neher predicted his vengeful victory over East Noble's Jake Weimer for a state spot, then went out and backed it up with a 13-5 major victory as the senior 145-pounder earned one of three Bellmont state slots, while Adams Central earned two tickets for this Friday's 76th IHSAA State Wrestling Finals.
WATERLOO— The Braves made the long trip to DeKalb physically on Thursday night but may have left their mental state of mind back at the Teepee.
The Barons systematically outplayed Bellmont from start to finish in an NHC battle eventually pulling away for 49-32 victory.
It's a good thing that the wrestling winners Saturday at the Snider semi-state won't be decided "on paper." or worse yet, by some funky formula dreamed up by the Indiana Wrestling Coaches Association.
"The odds on paper probably don't favor us in about nine of our 10 matches," stated Bellmont coach Brent Faurote.
"But they are not guys we can't beat. The opportunities will be there, it's up to the kids, when they see something, to go get it."
Norwell motored to Decatur Tuesday night and ignored the cold weather outside as they blistered the nets hitting 66.7 percent of their shots from the field on 28-42 (21-29 from two and 7-13 from three) to mercifully end a winless season for the Bellmont Squaws by a lopsided 81-28 tally in the opening game of the IHSAA class 3A sectional 23.
