Jets, Braves tangle tonight at AC

December 27, 2011

By DYLAN MALONE
Tonight marks another meeting between county rivals AC and Bellmont on the hardwood. This year’s Braves/Jets meeting will be held at the Hangar in Monroe and in recent history that bodes well for the Jets.
The home team has won the last three meetings between these schools. Last year at Bellmont, the Braves defended their home field with a stunning 70-63 win against the heavily-favored Jets.

Wrestlers gear up for big invitational

December 27, 2011

There's just something about Mishawaka's Al Smith Invitational, it brings out the best Bellmont effort possible
The rugged 32-team normally has a half dozen ranked teams and usually includes most of northwest Indiana's best. Still, no school has taken home the top trophy more than the Braves in the 33-year history of the meet. Bellmont has 14 titles, and the only reason that number is not 15 is a broken hand suffered by Brooks Faurote in a 3-2 semi-final loss a year ago.

Giving out the gifts

December 26, 2011

By JIM HOPKINS
The Christmas season of 2011 is a special one for me. I was fortunate to survive my "event" this past summer. To steal a line from the great philosopher, Yogi, I appreciate all those who made this column necessary!
It's been an eventful year in Adams County sports, and there are many who deserve special rewards. That happens under the Daily Democrat Christmas Tree.
Below are a few of the most deserving:

Braves overcome Stars’ lineup shift for 45-39 win

December 23, 2011

BERNE — South Adams coach Eric Myers rolled the dice with seven lineup changes as his Starfires faced area wrestling behemoth Bellmont for the first time in 40 years, and the result was six victories and 29 points, but it wasn't enough as the No. 17 Braves scored a 45-29 victory at the Stardome Thursday night.

COACH’S COMMENTS:

(Kenadee) “The biggest thing that keeps her apart from the others is that she never says she cannot do something. At practice she is never lying down, back talking me, or refusing to do something that she might not feel to be important.” ~ Coach Tiffany Lee.

(Jenna) “She always tries her best, no matter who we are playing or what the score is.” ~Coach Gary Lepper.

Stars, Braves to renew mat rivalry

December 22, 2011

"I'm excited about it and I think our guys are excited, but we need to do much better than we did at Adams Central," stated South Adams' seventh-year wrestling coach Eric Myers on the match set for the Stardome tonight versus No. 17 Bellmont.

Lifelong friends reunite for Packers game

December 22, 2011

Lifelong South Adams Starfire friends recently reunited in Green Bay and attended the Green Bay Packers - Oakland Raiders football game. Scott Habegger, a Wisconsin resident, got the idea for the reunion after hearing TV announcers say that all football fans, at least once in their life, should  see a game at historic Lambeau Field.
"I've had the opportunity to see several Packers games at Lambeau, and I thought my high school buddies would enjoy seeing a game there as well," said Habegger.

Stars snap four-game skid, handle Parkway with ease

December 21, 2011

BERNE—The Starfire boys hosted buckeye state foe, Parkway, on Tuesday night and came away with a solid 57-42 victory over the Panthers to improve their record to 3-4 on the season.
After starting the season 2-0, the South Adams Starfires had lost their last four games including ugly losses to Jay County and Bluffton before finding their stride in a close loss at home to Heritage last week. Against Parkway, the Stars shot the ball very well at 49% for the game and 70% from the free throw line.

December 20, 2011

The Lady Jets came to town to visit county-rival Bellmont in a battle at the Teepee and the Squaws defended their home turf well coming away with an impressive 59-34 victory against Adams Central improving winning their second straight game in a row after losing their first ten.

Jets make another late surge, beat Lakewood Park Panthers, 68-53

December 19, 2011

AUBURN—The Jets played their second game in as many days on Saturday after defeating the Woodlan Warriors handily the night before as they travelled to Auburn to take on the Lakewood Park Christian Panthers winning, 68-53.
There was a sense of "déjà vu" for AC as the game was very similar to the Woodlan game the night before in that the Jets played even with their competition in the first half, then had a strong third quarter and coasted in the fourth for the victory.

Tonight the Squaws play host to ACAC team Heritage at the Teepee. The varsity game is slated to...
