Starfires 11-0 after sweep of Spencer Hayworth Invitational

    BERNE — South Adams dominated the Spencer Hayworth Invitational Saturday, rolling to 11-0 on the season by taking 57 of 70 matches in posting five convincing victories.
    In their biggest challenge of the day, the Starfires thumped Jay County 64-16, winning 11 of the 14 matches. Jay finished the day 4-1 and is now 11-2 on the season.

Mat Braves go 4-1 at New Castle

    NEW CASTLE — No. 19 New Palestine won the final three matches by fall, defeating Bellmont 42-33 Saturday at the New Castle Super Dual, and despite a loss to Pendleton Heights the Dragons earned the overall title by scoring the most points on the day.
    Eighth-rated Bellmont, now 9-2, defeated Pendleton Heights 33-31 and finished the day 4-1, in a three-way tie at the top. The Braves also downed New Castle 69-12, Franklin County 60-18 and Whiteland 81-0.

AC swimmers top Coldwater, O.

    MONROE—Adams Central ripped through the warm water of the AC pool Thursday night to post a pair of lopsided wins over Coldwater with the boys demolishing their opponent 148-18 and the girls won via a 103-65 tally.

South Adams girls win one!

    BERNE— For the first time in a span of about a season and a half, 24 games to be exact, the Lady Starfires of South Adams won a basketball game, and they did it in dominating fashion over the Muncie Burris Lady Owls, 56-39.
    Coach Ryan Cunningham, now 1-5, paced the sidelines for most of the game grumbling about the turnovers in the game, and with good reason. His team had 32 of them.
    The good news for SA was that Burris had 47.

All-ACAC teams announced for football

    The ACAC All-Conference football teams were released today with three-peat ACAC champion Leo Lions leading the way with six members on the first team. The Starfires of South Adams had five members on the first team, while Garrett and Heritage each had four.  Adams Central, Bluffton, and Woodlan added two from their squads.

AC boys, SA girls win in county pool battle

    BERNE—Two nearly identical scores were posted in swim matches between county rivals Adams Central and South Adams Tuesday night at the SA pool with the Adams Central boys team earning a 111-61 triumph while the South Adams girls raced to a 109-60 victory.
    In the win for the AC boys, Gavin Kaehr recorded two new Adams Central school records in the meet. Kaehr notched a 2:18.40 swim in the 200 IM to win that race by over eight seconds. He had respective splits of :26.85, :35.63, :42.73, and :33.19 for his new mark.

‘Heavy’ weight shift will likely translate into a heap of forfeits

    How's the new weight class switch, adding a heavier weight class for 2011-12 while taking out a middle class, working out after just one week of wrestling?
    Well, in Saturday's Super Dual at Yorktown, Bellmont senior Isaac Birch, in the new 220-pound class, received three forfeits. South Adams went 5-0 at Homestead, but had to forfeit the 195-pound class in every meet. There were other forfeits at both sites in various meets at 182 and heavyweight.

Stars roll Daleville, 66-54

    BERNE— The Starfire boys took on the Daleville Broncos at the Stardome for a non-conference match-up on the court Saturday night and came away with a 66-54 victory to improve to 2-0 on the year.
    The game featured the return of last year's leading scorer Dustin Wanner who picked up right where he left off against the Broncos after missing the Union City game with an ankle injury.

    YORKTOWN — "Even though it's early in the season, we were hoping to get them," stated Bellmont coach Brent Faurote, whose Braves have avenged regular-season losses to Yorktown in two of the last three regional showdowns in February.

Braves win opener at Teepee

    Bellmont coach John Baker picked up the first win of his career in front of a home crowd at the Teepee on Saturday night as his Braves handled the Woodlan Warriors, 58-44.
    The Braves jumped out to a 5-0 start at the beginning of the first quarter, but looked a bit shaky the rest of the frame as they came back to the bench down 12-11 after one.
    Coach Baker would have none of it. "This is not Bellmont basketball!" he hollered in the huddle, and his players got the message.
