After stellar seasons by both South Adams and Adams Central that concluded prematurely at the sectional level, both the Jets and Starfires can take a little bit of solace in the releasing of the Allen County Athletic Conference's all-conference selections released this week. The All-Area team has also been announced that includes the NHC, ACAC, SAC, and neighboring county schools as well.
INDIANAPOLIS—The storybook ending would have been seeing the Adams Central Lady Jets pull off the unlikely and win their first state championship on Saturday afternoon at Ben Davis High School in Indianapolis.
Unfortunately, sometimes the better team wins and AC came up short against South Putnam, a team who went 31-0 to finish off a perfect season and their second straight 2A title with a 3-1 win over the upstart Lady Jets.
After the contest, the deflated Jets had mixed emotions on their run.
KOKOMO—Perhaps it was just a foretelling of things to come in the class 3A baseball semi-state game won 11-6 by Western High School over Bellmont at Highland Park Saturday when the start of the game was delayed for several minutes.
Never before in the history of Adams Central High School has a Jet softball team ever won an IHSAA sectional tournament, let alone a regional tournament, and heaven forbid, even think about a semi-state championship.
This year, however, a group of Adams Central ball players have banded together to play a game they love. That dedication of the game puts them in the IHSAA state finals this Saturday against the South Putnam Eagles, a team that arguably is a strong favorite to win the crown.
There are four teams left in the 3A state finals for baseball in Indiana and the Bellmont Braves are one of them for the first time since 2002 when Jon Stevens' group of Braves fell to Vincennes Lincoln, 4-0 in the state final.
Despite the visit to Victory Field in Indianapolis back in 2002, the Braves are still without a semi-state title due to the fact that there was not a semi-state conducted from 2000-03.
For the first time since 1976, the Bellmont Braves' golf team will be playing in the regional finals thanks to a second place finish at Timberidge, Norwell's course, on Friday night.
The qualifying is Bellmont's third regional berth in school history with the only others being in '72 and '76.
GREENTOWN—First it was the sectional, then it was the regional.
Adams Central softball teams had NEVER won either tournament in the history of the IHSAA softball post-season play. So the team that was 6-11 at mid-season put on a surge of epic proportions in May and ended up with both titles.
Athletes from both Bellmont and Adams Central are all seeded among the best in their events at the annual IHSAA track and field state finals to be held Friday and Saturday at the Indiana University track stadium in Bloomington.
ALBION—Winning the school’s first ever sectional title was not enough for Adams Central coach Cary Blake and his group of Lady Jets as they traveled to Central Noble and blanked the Lady Cougars, 5-0 to take the regional crown as well on Tuesday night.
The NHC has released its all-conference softball teams for the 2012 campaign but only one member of Bellmont's squad will be represented on the team.
Senior Brieann Burkhalter, daughter of the Squaws' head coach Rick Burkhalter, was named to the first team at the corner infielder position along with Hannah Schnorr of Columbia City.
