"Overall, not a bad game, but we are capable of much more."
So said Bellmont's first-year varsity baseball coach Ben Fawbush after the Braves opened their 2011 season at home on Wednesday with a 6-3 win over the Bluffton Tigers.
The key hit was Will Busse's bases-loaded double in the sixth inning that drove in three runs and made the score 6-1.
The visiting Wells Countians are 0-1.

Despite first-high-school-meet jitters, a bone-chilling breeze and a tough Eastbrook opponent, Adams Central's new freshman girls track class did just fine Tuesday at the AC oval, taking five individual firsts and two more frosh were on the winning 3200 relay team in the 79-44 loss.
Junior weightman Troy Tonner fired career bests to win both the shot put and discus events Tuesday, scoring the only two firsts for the Jets as they opened the 2011 boys track season with a 91-32 loss to a strong Eastbrook squad.
Tonner tossed the shot 47' 3.5" to easily win the event, and he topped his previous best by almost three feet. In the discus, his winning toss of 143'8" was over five feet better than his previous best.

Bellmont has new head baseball coach this year in veteran Ben Fawbush, a long time assistant coach in the program, and with him comes a whole lot of optimism.
Despite losing some of the top players in 3A, Fawbush feels that his club can be very successful. "We expect to have a great team this year. Anything less than a sectional championship is unacceptable in our minds. We truly feel we have a state caliber team," said Fawbush, who kept the veteran staff of former coach Randy Hisner.
Caden Friedt at 95-pound Intermediate and Bryce Baumgartner in the Novice 120-pound division recently took state championships for the Decatur Wrestling Club at the Indiana State Wrestling Association Folkstyle Tournament, held over two weekends.
Baumgartner also competed nationally and took second place in his weight class in the tourney held recently in Iowa. Bryce, who has won national titles in prior years, lost the title match just 4-3. It was his only loss in the tourney.

Despite the loss of 12 seasons of varsity experience, including second biggest singles winner in the history of the program, Adams Central's fifth-year head tennis coach Michael Hower has a positive spin on the situation.
"We are excited to have some new faces fill out our varsity team," said Hower.
It only took a few minutes following UConn's win over Kentucky Saturday night for the talking heads, the experts on college basketball, to cast away Butler's incredible two-year run for the NCAA championship.
All six "experts" were quick to ring out "UConn" because of their overwhelming talent advantage. They're just too tough for the boys from Indy. In fact, I hear a lot of resentment from the talk show hosts because Butler and VCU, mid-majors, ruined the Final Four party.

"I think we can finish in the top four of the conference," stated Adams Central girls track coach Bart Lehman, on his outlook for the coming track campaign.
Well, either Lehman knows a lot more than anyone else about his girls track team, or he's counting on a bunch of varsity-unknowns to step in, fit right in, and score big time.
Maybe it's both.

The Holly Hankenson era is on.
The Bellmont freshman standout easily won both hurdle events, added the long jump and she anchored the winning 1600 relay team to lead Carl Risch's Squaws to a 77-45 win over Bishop Luers Wednesday in the 2011 season track opener at the BHS oval. In the boys meet, Luers scored a 76-48 victory.
Bellmont will go south and will be in the same sectional with Yorktown, while South Adams will be shoved in with nine-time state champion Sheridan as a result of the latest IHSAA two-year realignment plan announced Wednesday afternoon.
New tourney plans were issued for football, as well as the grouping of baseball, basketball, softball and volleyball, and a new two-class soccer tourney was unveiled.
