BRAVES TAKE MONROE—The Decatur Braves 14U all-star team finished the season by playing in the Brickhouse Monroe Tournament from July 26-29th. The Braves won their pool games by defeating the Portland team with a score of 36-2, then beat the Monroe Harvestland team, 7-1. In the semis, Monroe's Crushers got beat by Portland & the Braves defeated Harvestland once again, this time, 3-2. Bellmont finished their title run with a win in the championship game beating Portland, 12-0.
REESE AWARD WINNERS—The above 12-and-under Decatur Baseball players received post-season awards recently at Rube Wynn Field. Tyler Bauer (top, left), Lukas Strickler (next to Bauer), and Nate Kaczmarek (below) were given the annual Leo Alberding Outstanding Player Awards for their regular season accomplishments. Last week, the Decatur Baseball Association hosted a skills competition for the Mays and Reese Leagues and had a successful turnout. The skills contest tested players ability to bat and field among other fundamentals.
Jon Ruble, a player from Decatur Dental, took first place in the Reese League competition, while Tanner Walker, Kobe Oritz, and Caden Staub all took home trophies for their work from the Mays League.
Decatur True Value, the eight and under All-Star team, came in second place at the Monmouth All-Star tournament.
The tourney was a pool consisting of six teams: Decatur, Monmouth, New Haven, Elmhurst, Hoagland, and Monroeville.
NASCAR driver Jimmie Johnson earned the checkered flag in this year's Brickyard 400, a record-tying fourth victory at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and DDD corospondent Chris McCoy was present taking the festivities, including this shot of Johnson's #48 car.
2012 JUNIOR LEAGUE SOFTBALL RUNNERS-UP—Rorick Electric ended their season on Wednesday night in second place falling to 1st Class Hoosiers in the championship game at Hannah Nuttman, 3-1. The 2012 Iron Kid triathlon, sponsored by the Decatur Parks & Recreation, was held July 21 at Adams Central High School with approximately 50 area children participating in the three event competition.
A day after surviving Eichhorn's Jewelry in the semi-finals, undefeated 1st Class Hoosiers faced another challenge in the championship when they edged Rorick Electric in a pitcher's duel, 3-1.
Rorick had just beaten West End in the other semi-final, 10-1 and were definitely playing their best softball after 1st Class had been virtually unopposed all season long.
After breezing through the first round against the eight-seeded Decatur Dental Monday night, 12-0, the 1st Class Hoosiers faced their toughest game of the season in the semi-final match-up against Eichhorn's Jewelry but six runs in the fifth inning sealed the comeback win for the undefeated one seed, 11-9.
