Many athletes at South Adams High School have been honored by school officials for their academic achievements. The following have grade-point averages of 3.67 (A-minus) or higher on the SAHS four-point scale, and were named scholar-athletes.
Seniors—Curtis Mitchel, football; Bobby Switzer, soccer; Aine O'Donnell, tennis manager; Reid Zurcher, tennis; Kylie Cisney, golf; Erik Subler, football; Emily Miller, cross-country; Sam Amstutz, football.
Bellmont placed five players on the All-NHC football squad for 2010, including first team offensive back Daniel Meyer.
Earning second-team honors for the Braves were offensive guard Jacob Brown, a sophomore, defensive tackle Travis Thatcher and defensive back will Busse.
Halfback Ryley Hankenson was given honorable mention.
BERNE — South Adams senior Taylor LeFever was the top rusher and receiver for the 6-6 South Adams Starfires this past season, garnering a total of 1,388 yards from scrimmage, it was announced Friday night after the Starfires' 43-21 loss to Churubusco in the Class A Sectional 3A championship game.
"Unbelievable!! They were No. 1 in the state and I can't believe we pulled together and beat them in three games," said spirited senior middle hitter Madison Schultz in the celebration after Bellmont's Squaws squelched the bid by Indianapolis Brebeuf Jesuit to claim a second straight 3A State Volleyball Championship Saturday night at Ball State's Worthen Arena.
MUNCIE — A stunned Indianapolis Brebeuf Jesuit Braves volleyball team walked off the floor Saturday at the John E. Worthern Arena on the campus of Ball State University asking the question 'did anyone get the license number of the truck that just hit us?'"
About 2,000 jurors from Adams County had the answer and the license plate number was "1A SQUAWS" as the Bellmont volleyball team convincingly rolled to the class 3A state volleyball title in the IHSAA State Finals over the defending state champs.
Bellmont volleyball coach Craig Krull feels that the outcome of Bellmont's 3A State Volleyball Finals match with No. 1 Brebeuf will likely not be decided by the major players for both squads.
"I believe that this is going to come down to which team's role players are better," said Krull, whose Squaws will be seeking a second state title in four years when they line up opposite the Jesuit Braves at 5:30 p.m. tomorrow at Ball State's Worthen Arena.
There are a lot of similarities between the two finalists in the class 3A state championship match Saturday evening at Ball State University's Worthern Arena.
Both Bellmont and Brebeuf bring excellent records to the plate with Brebeuf at 31-2 and Bellmont at 34-4. Ironically, of the few losses, both teams suffered defeats at the hands of Yorktown during the regular season. Bellmont repaid the Tigers with a 3-1 setback in the finals of the Plymouth semi-state last Saturday.
Tickets for Saturday’s IHSAA Volleyball State Championships slated for Ball State will be on sale at Bellmont High School starting on Wednesday, November 3, during school hours. Tickets will be $9.00 per person.
Tickets are required for those in kindergarten and above. The Bellmont Squaws will be playing in the third match of the afternoon with game-time scheduled for no sooner than 5:30 p.m. at Worthen Arena on the campus of Ball State.
"There is a state of urgency because it could be the last game, and you'd better dive and get that ball because it could be the deciding point," stated Bellmont junior setter Steph Shoup, trying to explain the incredible statistical numbers from Bellmont's huge win over Yorktown in the match to go state Saturday night at Plymouth.
Shoup had 45 assists and 13 digs, and there were 64 kills by a variety of Bellmont hitters.
PLYMOUTH — Down 23-19 in the second game after losing the first one, Bellmont, led by Payton Schultz, came alive, zoomed past a stunned Yorktown team with six straight points to tie the match, then won the next two for the 2010 Plymouth Semistate championship and a spot in next Saturday's 3A State Championship match set for Ball State.
