What a welcome to Decatur for Nate Andrews, and his family, received Tuesday night when he attended the North Adams School Board meeting. Wow!
I wish I could say I was surprised. The way things have gone for this school board, something like this was almost predictable.
Bellmont softball fans should get their hiking boots out, Norwell has once again been awarded the area girls softball sectional.
Bellmont will take on Maconaquah in the semi-final round of the Norwell 3A Softball Tournament on Tuesday, May 24, at 5:15 p.m.
Norwell (6-12) will meet Peru in the only quarter-final contest on Monday, May 23, 5:15 p.m. and that winner will meet Fort Wayne Wayne in a semi-final contest on Wednesday, May 25, also at 5:15.
Carroll won boys' varsity and reserve golf matches on a steamy Wednesday at Cross Creek Golf Club.
The varsity score was 157 to 162 and the JV score was 162 to 201.
In the varsity match, Carroll’s No. 1, Oliver Gibson, shot a one-under 35 for medalist honors. Alex Cahill added 40 while Cam Brower and Alex Ramsey both shot 41 to pace the winners.
FORT WAYNE — With the automatic timer set to go, all the Bellmont 1600 relay team needed was another record-setting run, and they more than got that at the Carroll track Tuesday evening as the young Squaws foursome left no doubt about which team is the fastest in Bellmont history as they shattered that mark, as well as the Northeast Hoosier Conference record with a blistering 4:01.96.
Ryan Biegel will not return as South Adams High School's head boys basketball coach next school year, but will remain in his position as an elementary school physical education teacher.
During last night's school board meeting, board members voted unanimously to not renew his coaching contract for the 2011-12 school year.
The ACAC Girls Tennis Tournament, which was started on Saturday but interrupted because of rain, concluded with the singles placement matches Monday on the Adams Central Courts. Leo's Madison Carroll defeated Bluffton's Kara Fiechter, 6-4, 6-1, for the crown. She advanced to the finals after topping AC's Hali Wendel 7-5, 6-2 and beating Amanda Stone of Bluffton 6-2, 6-2 in the opening round.
Earlier, South Adams claimed the doubles title as Kassy Potts and Lindsey Graber went through the tourney unbeaten.
New Haven's Kayla Fendel tossed a four-hit shutout Monday evening as the Bulldogs earned a 7-0 win in Northeast Hoosier Conference softball action at the Bellmont diamond over the Squaws.
The Bulldogs did most of their damage in the third inning off Bellmont hurler Nicole Schevenius when they tallied five runs. New Haven had three extra base hits in the game including a triple by Courtney Barfell and doubles by Destiney Beard and Mazie Hake. All four BHS hits were singles.
BERNE — Bellmont captured eight first places and set four meet records, but still finished second to host South Adams in the South Adams Girls Track Invitational Friday night.
In the boys meet, South Adams also won that meet, topping second place Snider and third-place Heritage.
The Starfire girls totaled 116 points to the 102.3 points of Bellmont. Adams Central was third with 80 points.
Bellmont used a nine-run third inning to its advantage Saturday and posted an 11-0 win over county rival South Adams in varsity softball action at the BHS diamond.
The scheduled second game was postponed due to rain.
Bellmont led just 1-0 after two innings with SA's Lily Taing and Bellmont's Brieann Burkholder engaged in a battle on the mound.
The nine-run assault broke the game wide open for the Squaws and allowed them to win by the 10-run mercy rule.
Carroll hurler Steve Remesnik scattered five hits, striking out three with four walks, leading the 4A No. 4 Chargers to a 7-2 win Thursday night at Bellmont, which is rated No. 10 in 3A.
Carroll improved to 14-2 with the victory. Bellmont lost for the third straight time and slipped to 9-5, and 1-2 in the NHC.
