Coaching staffs for fall sports were solidified by school boards at Adams Central, Bellmont, and South Adams this week with South Adams having the most changes.
The SA school board approved 40 fall coaches ranging from volunteer to head coaches and noted 17 of the 40 positions will be filled by new individuals.
Tournament action in both the Decatur Girls Junior and Senior Leagues began Monday night with a pair of games in both divisions.
In the Senior League, Geimer's Construction belted out 13 hits including a two-run homer by Taylor Kuhnle in the fifth and they handed Barker and Sons a 19-1 defeat while in the other contest, Mind's Eye Graphics also recorded a double-digit victory taking out the First Bank of Berne by an 18-8 count.
Regular season champion Erie Haven dominated second place finisher McIntire Heating in the winner's bracket game of the double-elimination Sandy Koufax League tournament played Monday night at Worthman Field.
In action in the losers' bracket semis at Monroe's Don Ray Memorial Park, Corner Deli of Monroe scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh for a 10-9 win over Bluffton Elks, and Courtesy Motors of Decatur stopped South Adams 9-3 in the second game.
WAPAKONETA, O. — The Decatur Thunderbirds brought the big bats this past weekend to the Moon City Classic Baseball Tournament, taking the 16-team tourney with a perfect 6-0 record.
The Decatur Baseball Association team slugged out 98 hits to the 16 of the opposition and won by the run rule in five of the six games. The T-Birds had only 19 innings of at-bats in the six games. The only close game was a 10-7 win over Anna (Ohio) Rockets in the third game on Saturday. The Birds lashed out 12 hits to win that game.
The Decatur Football League will conduct registration for its 17th season on two dates: Saturday,July 30, 7 to 11 a.m., and on Wednesday, Aug. 3, 5-7 p.m. near the entrance of the Bellmont baseball field.
Physical exams, which are required for competitors, will be held on Saturday, July 30 only, from 8-10 a.m. and will cost $10.
The top two teams in the Adams-Wells Sandy Koufax League tournament continued on their way in action at Worthman Field Thursday night with undefeated Erie Haven blasting Courtesy Motors 13-3 and McIntire Heating and Air Conditioning fashioning a 7-3 triumph over Monroe Country Corner Deli.
The fourth-annual Northeast Indiana Coaches vs. Cancer golf outing on Friday, July 15, will be held in Allen County, with the proceeds to benefit Lou Koning of Decatur, a teacher and basketball coach at Bellmont High School for 32 years who has leukemia.
The event will be at Brookwood Golf Course, costing $240 per foursome, which includes greens fees, use of a cart, and a meal. There will be a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Hole sponsorships cost $100.
The top two Decatur seeds in the annual Sandy Koufax League post-season tournament were victorious Wednesday night although not without early challenges in their games.
MONROE—The HME Crushers lived up to their name Tuesday night in the play-in round of the double-elimination Sandy Koufax League tournament by smashing 12 hits, four of which were for extra bases, and easily defeated the Bluffton Parks team, 18-2.
The Crushers tallied five in the first, four in the second, seven in the third, and then polished the game off with two in the fourth.
The second annual Decatur Baseball Association skills contest, for boys ages 7 through 12, will be held on Wednesday, July 6, with registration starting at 5:15 p.m.
The Clemente (7-8) group will compete at 6 p.m., the Mays (9-10) group at approximately 6:45, and the Reese (11-12) group at approximately 7:30 p.m.
Players should register as early as possible, or at least a half hour prior to competing.
